Kolkata: Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee went ballistic against Hindu groups like RSS and Bajrang Dal on Sunday. He said that steps to link terrorism with Islam was sinister and unfortunate.

He attacked the radical Hindu groups for their alleged role in the Malegaon incident.

“Whenever and wherever terrorism is discussed, it is always linked with the Muslim community. Are the RSS and Bajrang Dal supporters clean? If they were clean then the Malegaon incident would not have happened,” said Bhattacharjee, while delivering his speech during the inauguration of Milan Mela, organised by the West Bengal Minorities Development and Finance Corporation.

The fair aims to promote handicrafts of minorities and to act as a platform for welfare schemes and loan facilities to them.

“In Malegaon, a military institute has been set up to train the terrorists. If the Central Government compromises with this kind of outfits, then the country will be destroyed soon. The state government would never compromise with any communal power and with terrorism as well,” he added.

Extremist Hindu groups are offering rewards of money, food and alcohol to mobs to kill Christians and to destroy their homes in India, according to aid workers in the eastern state of Orissa.

The allegations follow the British Government's refusal to bar members of two radical groups widely linked to the worst anti-Christian violence witnessed in India since Partition from entering the UK.

The US-based head of an organisation that runs several orphanages in Orissa, one of India's poorest regions, has claimed that Christian leaders are being targeted by Hindu militants and now carry a bounty on their heads. "The going price to kill a pastor is $250 US dollars," Dr Faiz Rahman, the chairman of Good News India (GNI), said.

A spokesman for the All India Christian Council (AICC) said: "People are being offered rewards to kill, and to destroy churches and Christian properties."

He added: "Different tasks have different rewards. They are being offered foreign liquor, chicken, mutton, and weapons. They are being given petrol and kerosene."

In recent months, Orissa has suffered a wave of murder and arson that has claimed at least 67 lives, according to the Catholic Church.

Several thousand homes have been razed, hundreds of places of worship destroyed and as winter approaches crops are now wasting in the fields.

A group of Catholic Bishops from Orissa recently gave warning that the violence was part of a "master-plan" to drive Christians from the Kandhamal district of Orissa, the scene of the worst unrest. In a letter to the state's chief minister they wrote: "This conflict is a calculated and pre-planned master-plan to wipe out Christianity from Kandhamal district, Orissa, in order to realise the hidden agenda … of establishing a Hindu Nation."

In recent days the violence has calmed, but at least 11,000 refugees remain in camps in Kandhamal. "They are too scared to go home. They know that it they return to their villages they will be forced to convert to Hinduism," Father Manoj, who is based at the Archbishop's office in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa, said.

This month Lord Malloch-Brown, Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, turned down a plea that members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bajrang Dal, two extremist groups widely linked to the Orissa violence, be barred from entering Britain.

"Neither organisation is proscribed in the UK or in India, nor do the Indian government classify either as a terrorist organisation," Lord Malloch-Brown said in reply to a question by former Cabinet Minister Lord Patten.

There have been calls from members of India's ruling government coalition for the RSS and Bajrang Dal to be banned. Analysts say the government is unlikely to act for fear of alienating Hindu voters in the run up to general elections expected in the spring.

Hindu extremist groups are offering money, food and alcohol to anyone who murders Christians and destroys their homes.

The violence is nothing new in Orissa, India, where India's Communist Party estimates that more than 500 Christians have been killed by Hindu mobs in Orissa since late August, 12 times more than official government claims of only 40 homicides.

But now the stakes are even higher – and pastors have a bounty on their heads.

Faiz Rahman, chairman of Good News India, said Hindu militants are targeting Christian leaders, the Christian Post reported.

"The going price to kill a pastor is $250," he said.

Rahman, a head of several orphanages in Orissa State, said he's helped 25 pastors to leave refugee camps, but 250 Christian leaders are still in shelters.

"All of the pastors are high value targets," Rahman told the UK-based Release International. "We've got to get them out of the refugee camps."

An All-India Christian Council spokesman said, "People are being offered rewards to kill, and to destroy churches and Christian properties. They are being offered foreign liquor, chicken, mutton and weapons. They are given petrol and kerosene."

One official said he personally authorized "cremation of more than 200 bodies" found in jungles after Christians were blamed for the death of Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati on Aug. 24. They continue to be persecuted even though Maoists openly admitted to murdering Saraswati.

Thousands of homes and churches have been destroyed, and an estimated 50,000 Christians have been forced to flee the violence. Mission Network News estimates 5,000 Christian homes have been burned and 200 churches ruined. According to the Christian Post, 30,000 people remain in government-operated refugee camps. Tens of thousands are living in forests – many seriously wounded.

Father Manoj, based at the archbishop’s office in Bhubaneshwar, said Christians remain in hiding.

"They are too scared to go home. They know that if they return to their villages they will be forced to convert to Hinduism."

Religious rights group Barnabus Fund told the group Hindu militants "forced" Christians in Orissa to "convert" to Hinduism by threatening them with rape if they refused.

Neighbors reportedly gang-raped a Hindu woman after her Christian uncle refused to renounce his faith, according to reports.

Another Christian woman named Jaspina was told by neighbors, "If you go on being Christian, we will burn your house and your children in front of you." She and her family were forced to eat cow excrement to "purify" themselves of Christianity.

Other Christians were doused with gasoline and told to participate in conversion ceremonies or be lit on fire.

This week, Hindu extremists said they have set a deadline for the capture of Saraswati's murderers. If the killers are not caught by Dec. 15, they promised to begin a massacre on Dec. 25, Christmas day.

According to the latest report, Orissa's Catholic bishops wrote an ominous letter to the state's chief minister. It read, "This conflict is a calculated and pre-planned master plan to wipe out Christianity from Kandhamal in order to realize the hidden agenda … of establishing a Hindu nation."

Convert or we will kill you, Hindu lynch mobs tell fleeing Christians

Hundreds of Christians in the Indian state of Orissa have been forced to renounce their religion and become Hindus after lynch mobs issued them with a stark ultimatum: convert or die.

The wave of forced conversions marks a dramatic escalation in a two-month orgy of sectarian violence which has left at least 59 people dead, 50,000 homeless and thousands of houses and churches burnt to the ground. As neighbour has turned on neighbour, thousands more Christians have sought sanctuary in refugee camps, unable to return to the wreckage of their homes unless they, too, agree to abandon their faith.

Last week, in the worst-affected Kandhamal district, The Observer encountered compelling evidence of the scale of the violence employed in a conversion programme apparently sanctioned by members of one of the most powerful Hindu groups in India, the 6.8-million member Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) - the World Hindu Council.

Standing in the ashes of her neighbour's house in the village of Sarangagada, Jaspina Naik, 32, spoke nervously, glancing towards a group of Hindu men watching her suspiciously. 'My neighbours said, "If you go on being Christians, we will burn your houses and your children in front of you, so make up your minds quickly",' she said. 'I was scared. Christians have no place in this area now.'

On her forehead, she wore a gash of vermilion denoting a married Hindu woman, placed there by the priest at the conversion ceremony she had been obliged to attend a day earlier, along with her husband and three young children. 'I'm totally broken,' she said. 'I have always been a Christian. Inside I am still praying for Jesus to give me peace and to take me out of this situation.'

She and her neighbour, Kumari Naik, 35, gazed forlornly at the charred remains of the house. The mob that arrived one evening in the first week of the violence, armed with swords and axes, had looted what they wanted before dousing the building with petrol and setting it alight. Kumari had fled into the nearby forest with her husband, Umesh, and 14-year-old son Santosh. A smoke-damaged child's drawing of Mickey Mouse pinned to one wall was all that remained of their former lives. Shattered roof tiles crunched underfoot as the women moved through the blackened rooms.

The priest had given them cow dung to eat during the ceremony, they said, telling them it would purify them. 'We were doing that, but we were crying,' Jaspina said.

The roads between the villages are rough and potholed, adding to the difficulties in accessing what is already a remote region, a six-hour drive from the state capital, Bhubaneshwar. The remoteness has undoubtedly played a part in the continuation of the violence, making it harder for police to move about quickly, even if they were minded to do so. Christian leaders, though, have accused the authorities of dragging their feet, claiming they are reluctant to antagonise the majority Hindu community in the run-up to parliamentary elections next year.

Relations between the Hindu and Christian communities were already at a low ebb when the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati on 23 August provided the trigger for the current wave of violence. The VHP blamed Christians and the mobs descended on the homes of neighbours and friends. Those who were too slow to get away were killed. Amid the savagery, two incidents stood out: a young Hindu woman working in a Christian orphanage was burnt alive and a nun was gang-raped.

Yet the VHP is unrepentant and appears to be involved, at least at grassroots level, with the campaign of forced conversions. One priest who converted 18 Christians in the village of Sankarakhole last week told The Observer that he had been approached by local VHP representatives to carry out the ceremony.

'The VHP people came with letters that said they wanted to be converted, so I converted them,' said Preti Singh Patra, who is the brother of a senior VHP official. Crouching on the ground in front of his temple, set in a small walled garden beneath a huge banyan tree, he ran through the details of the ceremony: first some fruit to eat, followed by a mixture of cow dung and urine mixed with milk and curd, a dip in water from the Ganges, an hour of prayers and then the painting of a bindi on the forehead.

Some local men stepped forward to speak to him. 'Don't say too much,' they warned. The priest seemed unconcerned. The 18 had been the only Christians in the village, he said. They were happy to convert.

Around the village, the countryside is a sea of green, a beautiful lush vista that offers, at a distance, no clues to the turmoil. Yet up close it is a landscape scarred by the ugly remains of homes and churches which lie shattered between other houses still inhabited and unscathed, those belonging to Kandhamal's Hindus.

A few miles down the road from Sankarakhole, in the village of Minia, Sujata Digal, 38, stood outside her own burnt-out home. The mob had arrived at 3am, she said. She and her husband Hari hid in the forest and watched the house burn. When they came out of the forest, the mob returned and told them to convert, and it was not a hard decision.

'They said, 'If you don't become Hindu, we'll burn your houses too and start killing you',' said Ashish Digal, the former Christian pastor. 'I've been forced to convert. Everyone is being converted. They beat us in the fields. I went to the temple. We had to say that we belonged to the Hindu state of Orissa, and that from this day we are Hindus.'

Before the violence started, Christians outnumbered Hindus in Minia: now 115 have converted, roughly half of their original number. The rest have fled.

Burn your Bibles, the men told Ashish Digal. He told them he had, but hid them instead. Every couple of days people come to his house to search, hoping to catch him out. Those people are not strangers; they are his neighbours.

They had been sitting idly in the main road when The Observer's car pulled up. Now the young driver, Sudhir, was rushing down the path that led to what remained of Sujata Digal's house, holding his head, visibly shaken. 'We must leave now,' he said.

He had been standing by the car when the men closed in around him. They left the talking to Prashant Digal, a teacher and organiser for the local VHP youth wing. 'Why did you bring these people here?', he demanded, punching Sudhir in the head. 'Take the vehicle and go. Leave them here for us.' They surrounded him, a young Hindu, and slapped him around again. No one came to his aid. 'If you stay, we will burn you with them in the car. You will all be killed. Just leave them,' they told him. But he did not, which was a decent thing for a frightened boy to do. He drove a little way down the road and parked around a corner, out of sight, and came back to raise the alarm.

Back on the main road, the men were waiting. 'Put your notebook and your cameras away. You will take no pictures and record nothing,' the VHP man said. 'You want to know what is happening? Now I will tell you why this is happening.' He blamed the Christians for taking the jobs of Hindus, for the murder of the Swami. The only solution was for Christians to convert, he said. 'This is a Hindu community. Everyone can stay here, as long as they are part of that community. And now you should go.'

IT WAS about 5:30pm last Monday when Sushil Kumar Naik heard knocking at what remained of his front door.

He peered through the holes left by the axes that the mob had used to batter their way in two weeks earlier. Outside stood a group of his Hindu neighbours, holding guns. The 43-year-old Indian air force officer was not surprised: he had been expecting them.

Like thousands of other Christians, Mr Naik has been living in fear since a wave of violence swept through the Kandhamal district of India's eastern state of Orissa two months ago. At least 59 people have died and thousands of homes and churches have been burned down.

Simmering tensions between the area's Hindu majority and their Christian neighbours were ignited by the murder of a hardline Hindu leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, on 23 August.

The initial Hindu backlash drove as many as 50,000 Christians from their homes. Now a new threat has emerged, and hundreds have been forced to renounce their faith and convert to Hinduism on threat of death.

The men who called on Mr Naik at his home in the village of Gadaguda last week were not in the mood for small talk.

"You'd better convert," they told him. "If you don't convert to Hinduism, you must leave this place."

They did not say what would happen if he stayed, but Mr Naik did not really need to be told.

The men outside were the same ones who had turned up in the middle of the night two weeks earlier, smashed their way in and set his home on fire. At the time, Mr Naik had been on duty at his air force base more than 1,000 miles away in Nicobar. The only people who were at home were his wife, Binita, 36, and his 70-year-old mother, Brundavati.

"We were sleeping at the time," his mother said, "And then people came from everywhere. We heard them shouting slogans and we ran to the school."

She started to cry, wiping her eyes on her yellow sari. "They were firing guns in the air. They burned most of our possessions. We only got out with the clothes we are standing in."

The slogans the mob had been shouting were those of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) – or World Hindu Council – the hardline Hindu organisation that has been blamed for encouraging Hindus to seek revenge for the killing of the swami. The VHP blames Christians for the murder, though Maoist guerrillas have claimed responsibility.

Those slogans were enough to alert Binita and Brundavati to the danger in time. But for their neighbours, Lalia and Mandikini Naik, there was to be no escape. The couple were in their 70s; they were simply too slow to get away.

"The men barged into their house. He couldn't move fast and they cut his throat with an axe," Binita said. "His wife was also cut."

The couple were taken to hospital, where Mr Naik died two days later. His wife remains seriously ill.

Sushil Naik's family were lucky; the police arrived within a few minutes, before the fire could consume the whole house. Even so, most of their possessions have been destroyed.

But they know it is only a matter of time before the men come back, and next time they might not be so lucky.

What makes it harder to bear is that they knew the people who attacked their home. Their family has been in Gadaguda for more than 100 years; the faces of the mob were those of their neighbours, people they had lived alongside and chatted to every day.

"If it was outsiders, they would not have known which house to attack," Mr Naik said.

When police officers eventually started to look for the culprits, some of the Hindu men took to the forests. From there, they appear to be able to venture forth at will to threaten those Christians who have remained in the area.

The Christians do not believe the police really want to help find the men responsible. They point out that smoke from the Hindus' cooking fires rises above the trees every night, but no-one goes after them.

"They were able to come to my house and threaten that we have to convert to Hinduism or stay away," Mr Naik said. "I don't understand what is happening. Even if we become Hindu, what guarantee is there that they will leave us in peace?"

It is a question many of Orissa's Christians are asking: many have concluded that their only option is to convert.

Last week, in the village of Sankarakhole, a little way down the road from Gadaguda, a total of 18 people converted. They were the only four Christian families in the village. Preti Singh Patra, the priest who carried out the ceremony, said the VHP had brought him letters from the families asking to convert. They had been happy to embrace Hinduism, he claimed.

Christians who have converted say nothing could be further from the truth.

In the village of Sarangagada, 32-year-old Jaspina Naik said she and her husband had been forced to take their three children to the temple to convert. "My neighbours said, 'If you go on being Christians, we will burn your houses and your children in front of you, so make up your minds quickly'," she said.

The VHP counters that many of those who are switching to Hinduism are recent converts from Christianity who had been attracted by the economic benefits that went with abandoning their low-caste status as Hindus. The VHP's leaders claim that many of those converts were so repulsed by the killing of the swami that they have been eager to rejoin the fold.

"They saw what happened to the swami – of course they want to come back, what's wrong with that?" said Gouri Prasad Rath, the VHP general secretary in Orissa.

He told The Scotsman the Christians had only themselves to blame for trying to entice Hindus to convert.

"If there is a problem today, I feel it is because the Hindus have lost patience," he said.

"Christians are giving Bibles to uneducated people who have nothing to eat and nothing to wear. They don't even know how to read it," he said. "If you go to their houses, they have a Bible and a photo of Jesus and, by keeping all these things, they think they have turned western.

"But you look at them and they still look like everyone else, and so what's the use of having such a religion when you have the same society as Hindus?"

Few of the 800 people crammed into tents in the Rudangia refugee camp a few hundred yards back along the road from Sushil Naik's home would see it that way.

For them, the idea that they can return to live alongside the people who turned on them so brutally seems little more than fantasy.

Rajma Naik, 45, fled to the camp after a mob chased her out of her home in Gonjugra village. The Hindus had been mocking them for their religion, she said. People were running everywhere, desperate to escape. In front of her, a woman stumbled as she tried to shepherd her eight-year-old son to safety.

"She was killed in front of me," she said. "She was running with her child. She was hit and she fell and they slashed her throat and then they got the child."

There was no way she could live alongside those people again, she said, not as a Christian, not as a Hindu.

"The Hindus say they will kill us," she said.

"In my village, we've been told that if we don't become Hindus, we will be killed. But I will never become a Hindu, even if I have to die."

Borepanga has been rocked by weeks of religious violence.

They were ordered to get on their knees and bow before the portrait of a Hindu preacher. They were told to turn over their Bibles, hymnals and the two brightly colored calendar images of Christ that hung on their wall. Then, Mr. Digal, 45, a Christian since childhood, was forced to watch his Hindu neighbors set the items on fire.

“ ‘Embrace Hinduism, and your house will not be demolished,’ ” Mr. Digal recalled being told on that Wednesday afternoon in September. “ ‘Otherwise, you will be killed, or you will be thrown out of the village.’ ”

India, the world’s most populous democracy and officially a secular nation, is today haunted by a stark assault on one of its fundamental freedoms. Here in eastern Orissa State, riven by six weeks of religious clashes, Christian families like the Digals say they are being forced to abandon their faith in exchange for their safety.

The forced conversions come amid widening attacks on Christians here and in at least five other states across the country, as India prepares for national elections next spring.

The clash of faiths has cut a wide swath of panic and destruction through these once quiet hamlets fed by paddy fields and jackfruit trees. Here in Kandhamal, the district that has seen the greatest violence, more than 30 people have been killed, 3,000 homes burned and over 130 churches destroyed, including the tin-roofed Baptist prayer hall where the Digals worshiped. Today it is a heap of rubble on an empty field, where cows blithely graze.

Across this ghastly terrain lie the singed remains of mud-and-thatch homes. Christian-owned businesses have been systematically attacked. Orange flags (orange is the sacred color of Hinduism) flutter triumphantly above the rooftops of houses and storefronts.

India is no stranger to religious violence between Christians, who make up about 2 percent of the population, and India’s Hindu-majority of 1.1 billion people. But this most recent spasm is the most intense in years.

It was set off, people here say, by the killing on Aug. 23 of a charismatic Hindu preacher known as Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, who for 40 years had rallied the area’s people to choose Hinduism over Christianity.

The police have blamed Maoist guerrillas for the swami’s killing. But Hindu radicals continue to hold Christians responsible.

In recent weeks, they have plastered these villages with gruesome posters of the swami’s hacked corpse. “Who killed him?” the posters ask. “What is the solution?”

Behind the clashes are long-simmering tensions between equally impoverished groups: the Panas and Kandhas. Both original inhabitants of the land, the two groups for ages worshiped the same gods. Over the past several decades, the Panas for the most part became Christian, as Roman Catholic and Baptist missionaries arrived here more than 60 years ago, followed more recently by Pentecostals, who have proselytized more aggressively.

Meanwhile, the Kandhas, in part through the teachings of Swami Laxmanananda, embraced Hinduism. The men tied the sacred Hindu white thread around their torsos; their wives daubed their foreheads with bright red vermilion. Temples sprouted.

Hate has been fed by economic tensions as well, as the government has categorized each group differently and given them different privileges.

The Kandhas accused the Panas of cheating to obtain coveted quotas for government jobs. The Christian Panas, in turn, say their neighbors have become resentful as they have educated themselves and prospered.

Their grievances have erupted in sporadic clashes over the past 15 years, but they have exploded with a fury since the killing of Swami Laxmanananda.

Two nights after his death, a Hindu mob in the village of Nuagaon dragged a Catholic priest and a nun from their residence, tore off much of their clothing and paraded them through the streets.

The nun told the police that she had been raped by four men, a charge the police say was borne out by a medical examination. Yet no one was arrested in the case until five weeks later, after a storm of media coverage. Today, five men are under arrest in connection with inciting the riots. The police say they are trying to find the nun and bring her back here to identify her attackers.

Given a chance to explain the recent violence, Subash Chauhan, the state’s highest-ranking leader of Bajrang Dal, a Hindu radical group, described much of it as “a spontaneous reaction.”

He said in an interview that the nun had not been raped but had had regular consensual sex.

On Sunday evening, as much of Kandhamal remained under curfew, Mr. Chauhan sat in the hall of a Hindu school in the state capital, Bhubaneshwar, beneath a huge portrait of the swami. A state police officer was assigned to protect him round the clock. He cupped a trilling Blackberry in his hand.

Mr. Chauhan denied that his group was responsible for forced conversions and in turn accused Christian missionaries of luring villagers with incentives of schools and social services.

He was asked repeatedly whether Christians in Orissa should be left free to worship the god of their choice. “Why not?” he finally said, but he warned that it was unrealistic to expect the Kandhas to politely let their Pana enemies live among them as followers of Jesus.

“Who am I to give assurance?” he snapped. “Those who have exploited the Kandhas say they want to live together?”

Besides, he said, “they are Hindus by birth.”

Hindu extremists have held ceremonies in the country’s indigenous belt for the past several years intended to purge tribal communities of Christian influence.

It is impossible to know how many have been reconverted here, in the wake of the latest violence, though a three-day journey through the villages of Kandhamal turned up plenty of anecdotal evidence.

A few steps from where the nun had been attacked in Nuagaon, five men, their heads freshly shorn, emerged from a soggy tent in a relief camp for Christians fleeing their homes.

The men had also been summoned to a village meeting in late August, where hundreds of their neighbors stood with machetes in hand and issued a firm order: Get your heads shaved and bow down before our gods, or leave this place.

Trembling with fear, Daud Nayak, 56, submitted to a shaving, a Hindu sign of sacrifice. He drank, as instructed, a tumbler of diluted cow dung, considered to be purifying.

In the eyes of his neighbors, he reckoned, he became a Hindu.

In his heart, he said, he could not bear it.

All five men said they fled the next day with their families. They refuse to return.

In another village, Birachakka, a man named Balkrishna Digal and his son, Saroj, said they had been summoned to a similar meeting and told by Hindu leaders who came from nearby villages that they, too, would have to convert. In their case, the ceremony was deferred because of rumors of Christian-Hindu clashes nearby.

For the time being, the family had placed an orange flag on their mud home. Their Hindu neighbors promised to protect them.

Here in Borepanga, the family of Solomon Digal was not so lucky. Shortly after they recounted their Sept. 10 Hindu conversion story to a reporter in the dark of night, the Digals were again summoned by their neighbors. They were scolded and fined 501 rupees, or about $12, a pinching sum here.

The next morning, calmly clearing his cauliflower field, Lisura Paricha, one of the Hindu men who had summoned the Digals, confirmed that they had been penalized. Their crime, he said, was to talk to outsiders.

Chandigarh, September 16: SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann today participated in a candlelit vigil organised by the National Christian League, Chandigarh, expressing solidarity with the minority community in the wake of communal attacks on Christians in Orissa.

Around 200 protesters held the march near parade ground in Sector 17 here this afternoon. Mann led the march.

He said: “The police acted as mere spectators to the accesses being committed on the Christians for six months and instead of helping them, they abetted the violence and never intervened to save the hapless Christians and their institutions.”

They handed over a memorandum to Punjab Governor Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd) highlighting the plight of the Christian community in Orissa and demanded immediate suspension of chief secretary, home secretary and director general of police, Orissa.

“The Christians have been chased and hunted like animals, nuns raped, priests and religious workers injured in hundreds. Over 40 churches have been destroyed, as we gather data from the victims and the kin of the dead,” stated league president Jagdish Masih.

“The perpetrator of violence is the Sangh Parivar and its component elements — the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal, the Vanvasi Kalyan Sangh and groups connected to the VHP”, Masih alleged.

They also insisted that the CBI should investigate the incidents and Kandhmal district of Orissa be handed over to the Indian Army.

Compensation must also be given to the next of kin of those killed and the churches should be rebuilt.

They demanded the setting up of a fast-track criminal court to try those found guilty of violence.

PATNA: Charging BJP President L K Advani of garnering Hindu votes by raking up the Ayodhya temple controversy and seeking a ban on SIMI, the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday demanded a similar ban on the RSS for "vitiating the atmosphere of communal harmony in the country."

"If SIMI must be banned, so must the RSS for vitiating the atmosphere of communal harmony in the country," Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters at Patna airport after making an aerial survey of flood-hit districts.

Dubbing the BJP as 'Bharat Jalao Party,' Yadav said it has always played divisive politics and cited its role in the recent shrine land agitation in Jammu. He said he would meet the Prime Minister tomorrow and seek central assistance for the lakhs marooned in the state.

He thanked the Centre for declaring the floods in Bihar as a "national calamity" and hoped that all governments would contribute to the cause of the flood victims in 16 north Bihar districts.

Accompanied by party General Secretary Amar Singh, Yadav said he would seek a reply from Orissa Chief Minister Navin Patnaik as to why action had not been taken against VHP workers for attacking Christians in his state.

Referring to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's indefinite sit-in agitation at the Nano project site in West Bengal's Singur, Amar Singh said the Uttar Pradesh government has provided land to the Tatas at Barabanki after they held direct talks with farmers.

"Anil Ambani, too, talked to the farmers directly for setting up his plant and I have no hesitation in saying that I will use my contacts for providing land for setting up of such industries in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country," Singh said.

Paswan for ban on RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal

Strongly condemning the attack on Christians allegedly by Sangh Parivar activists in Orissa, LJP leader and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Tesday sought a ban on RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal. The Lok Janshakti Party will hold a demonstration in New Delhi on September four protesting the violence in Orissa which was "shameful and dangerous for national integrity", Paswan told reporters in New Delhi.

To a question as to why he opposed ban on SIMI, while demanding such an action against the Sangh Parivar outfits, he said "my suggestion is to set up an independent inquiry commission that will analyse the activities of various organisations and recommend ban if they are involved in any anti-national work".

The commission with social scientists and human rights activists as its member can study the role of various organisations in spreading terror and communal tension.

"If SIMI has to be banned, then why not VHP, Bajrang Dal or RSS," Paswan, who had shared power with BJP till 2002, shot back, adding that until there were evidences of SIMI's involvement in terror acts, it should not be banned.

On Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati declining to recommend CBI probe into the Kanpur blast incident in which two Bajrang Dal activists were killed, he said that it showed that the BSP supremo was going soft towards the BJP.

Paswan, who had shared power with BJP till 2002, hit back the saffron party for condemning his suggestion to grant citizenship to Bangladeshis in India, saying that it had failed to identify them when it led a coalition at the Centre.

INDIA: HINDU EXTREMISTS SUSPECTED IN MURDER OF PRIEST

Body found in Andhra Pradesh state with 30 stab wounds, broken skull.

NEW DELHI, August 19 (Compass Direct News) – Christian leaders in Andhra Pradesh suspect the grisly murder of a Catholic priest was the work of Hindu extremists and that police have prematurely ruled out that possibility.

The battered body of Father Thomas Pandipally was found lying on a roadside in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh early on Sunday (August 17). The 38-year-old priest from the Carmelite of Mary Immaculate (CMI) order was killed while he was traveling by motorbike from the Lingampet area to Yellareddy village in Nizamabad district after 9:30 p.m. on August 16, reported Indian Catholic News Service (ICNS).

Fr. Pandipally, who was also the manager of a local school run by the CMI order, was to conduct the Sunday mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Yellareddy the following morning.

Nizamabad Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar told Compass that the murder had no religious motive. “There is communal harmony, and there has been no communal incident in the district at all,” he said.

There are only two possible angles in the murder case, Kumar said.

“One, the school where Fr. Pandipally was working is doing very well, and it also has a dispute with another school,” he said. “Second, Fr. Pandipally had expelled the driver of a school bus over some dispute on his salary.”

But the Rev. Father Alex Thannippara, a provincial superior of the CMI order, said he was in “complete disagreement” with Kumar’s claim of communal harmony in the area.

The Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (All India Students’ Council or ABVP, student wing of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party) are all violently active in Nizamabad, Fr. Thannippara said.

He pointed out that on January 16 a mob of around 500 people led by ABVP workers prevented the Hyderabad archbishop from blessing the new building of an HIV/AIDS care center run by the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) sisters in Lingampet.

“The crowd also indulged in vandalism and demolished a statue of Mother Mary,” Fr. Thannippara said. “The police had to lock up the building and take the keys with them to pacify the crowd.”

He added that the tensions erupted despite the support of district authorities for the center.

“Later, the FCC sisters filed a suit in the court of law against the protestors,” Fr. Thannippara said. “And the sisters started receiving threats on phone that if they did not withdraw the case, some members of their communities would be attacked.”

The school where the slain priest was working was also targeted around two years ago. “A huge crowd led by RSS supporters gathered around the school and tried to parade the then-principal naked under flimsy pretexts, but the police protected him,” he said.

Fr. Thannippara said the school had no dispute with any other school, though he acknowledged that other schools may be jealous of the CMI order. He added that Fr. Pandipally didn’t ask the school bus driver to leave but only refused to raise his salary.

When school workers heard about Fr. Pandipally’s murder, all staff members came except the driver, he said, but “that does not necessarily mean he is the culprit.”

“Fr. Pandipally was very humble,” Fr. Thannippara said. “Why should anyone kill him so brutally, I can’t understand.”

According to ICNS, there were more than 30 stab injuries on Fr. Pandipally’s body, especially in the abdomen.

“His head was hit with sticks and boulders, and the skull was split open,” ICNS reported. “All over his face, on his eyes, lips and cheeks, deep wounds were found. His motorcycle was thrown in bushes about four kilometers away. He was done to death in the forest, and his body was brought back and thrown in the middle of the road.”

ICNS also reported that Fr. Pandipally received a phone call inquiring when he was leaving for Yellareddy.

Archbishop Marampudi Joji of Hyderabad has also linked the murder to growing intolerance against Christians in parts of India.

“The Indian church is shocked and deeply saddened by this barbarous killing, which is the result of a growing climate of intolerance and violence against Christians in the country,” he told Asia News.

Brutal, Mysterious Murders

Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a strange trend of brutal and mysterious murders of Christian workers.

On June 8, 2006, the body of Prem Kumar, a 67-year-old preacher from the Church of South India, was found in a forest in the same district, Nizamabad. Kumar’s head was crushed beyond recognition, apparently with heavy stones. (See Compass Direct News, “Preacher Murdered in Andhra Pradesh, India,” June 12, 2006.)

A young man approached Kumar early in the morning requesting that he hold a prayer meeting in Rampur Thanda village later that day. He never returned from that “meeting” and was found murdered.

In May 2005, pastors K. Isaac Raju and K. Daniel were brutally murdered near the state capital, Hyderabad. (See Compass Direct News, “Second Pastor Found Dead in Andhra Pradesh, India,” June 6, 2005.) Unknown persons called both pastors by phone before they disappeared, asking if they would act as wedding celebrants. Raju went to meet a caller in Anantpur district on May 24, 2005 and disappeared; an unidentified caller then phoned the police on June 2, describing where to find Raju’s body.

Previously, on May 21, callers had put Daniel into a motorized rickshaw and taken him to a cemetery in Karwan, where they beat him severely before strangling him and dumping his body on the city outskirts.

An anonymous letter was sent to a local newspaper claiming the murders were carried out by an organization called the Anti-Christian Forum. The letter promised further killings.

An article in the New Indian Express on June 27, 2005, quoted a man identified only as Goverdhan, who along with his two friends allegedly murdered the two preachers.

“I am not against Christianity, but Raju and Daniel converted hundreds of Hindu families,” Goverdhan said. “They enticed them with money. We have done this to prevent further conversions. This act should be a lesson for others.”

In 2000, Pastor Yesu Dasu, 52, was killed in a similar fashion. Two people riding a motorbike came to his home on the evening of September 11 and asked for Dasu, saying someone wanted to speak with him.

Assailants then took Dasu to the outskirts of Mustabad in Karimnagar district. They bound his hands together and hit him repeatedly with an axe, eventually severing his head.

Dasu’s body was found in a pool of blood at a cattle shed near Kothakunta, along the Mustabad-Siddipet highway, three kilometers (nearly two miles) from Karimnagar. Several pieces of the body were found scattered at the murder scene.

Extremists had earlier warned Dasu to cease preaching or face the consequences. (See Compass Direct News, “Murder of Christian Preacher Remains Unsolved in India,” October 10, 2003.)

The Congress Party, with Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a Christian, as the chief minister, rules Andhra Pradesh state. Hindu extremists have accused Reddy of giving a free hand to Christian missionaries in the state.

Jesus as a Reincarnation of Krishna

Hindus fanatics preach that Krishna was the eighth "avatar" or incarnation of the god Vishnu - one of the Hindu deities in the Hindu trinity. Hindu scriptures state that Krishna "appeared in all the fullness of his power and glory." Krishna was born sometime between 900 and 1200 B.C. and his religious teachings can be found in the Bhagavad-Gita, one of the sacred texts in Hinduism. The karmic similarities between Jesus and the Hindu messiah named Krishna (1200 B.C.) are many. There over one hundred similarities between the Hindu and Christian saviors which could easily fill a volume. Some of these similarities are apocryphal which means their source comes from the extra-canonical scriptures of Hinduism.

Identical Life Experiences

(1)	Krishna was miraculously conceived and born of the Virgin Devaki ("Divine One") as a divine incarnation.
(2)	He was born at a time when his family had to travel to pay the yearly tax.
(3)	His father was a carpenter yet Krishna was born of royal descent.
(4)	His birth was attended by angels, wise men and shepherds, and he was presented with gifts.
(5)	He was persecuted by a tyrant who ordered the slaughter of thousands of infants who feared that the divine child would supplant his kingdom.
(6)	His father was warned by a heavenly voice to flee the tyrant who sought the death of the child. The child was then saved by friends who fled with them in the night to a distant country. When the tyrant learned that his attempt to kill the child failed, he issued a decree that all the infants in the area be put to death. Writing about Krishna in the eighteenth century, Sir William Jones stated, "In the Sanskrit dictionary, compiled more than two thousand years ago, we have the whole history of the incarnate deity, born of a virgin, and miraculously escaping in infancy from the reigning tyrant of his country." (Asiatic Researches, Vol. I, p. 273).
(7)	The Bible states that Jesus and family fled to Egypt afterward to escape from King Herod. According to the Christian apocryphal text "the Gospel of the Infancy," the family traveled to Maturea, Egypt. Krishna was born in Maturea, India, hundreds of years earlier.
(8)	He was baptized in the River Ganges.
(9)	The missions of Krishna and Jesus were the same - the salvation of humanity.
(10)	Krishna worked miracles and wonders such as raising the dead and healing lepers, the deaf and the blind.
(11)	Krishna used parables to teach the people about charity and love.
(12)	Jesus taught his disciples about the possibility of removing a mountain by faith. According to tradition, Krishna raised Mount Goverdhen above his disciples to protect his worshipers from the wrath of Indra.
(13)	"He lived poor and he loved the poor."
(14)	Krishna washed the feet of the Brahmins and transfigured before his disciples.
(15)	Krishna's teachings and Jesus' teachings were very similar. The celebrated French missionary and traveler, Evarist-Regis Hucv, who made a journey of several thousand miles through China and Tibet, stated, "If we addressed a Mogul or Tibetan this question, 'Who is Krishna?' the reply was instantly 'The savior of men." According to Robert Cheyne, "All that converting the Hindoos to Christianity does for them is to change the object of their worship from Krishna to Christ." Appleton's Cyclopedia says this about the teachings of Krishna: "Its correspondence with the New Testament is indeed striking."
(16)	There is an extra-canonical Hindu tradition which states that Krishna was crucified. According to some traditions, Krishna died on a tree or was crucified between two thieves.
(17)	He descended to hell, rose bodily from the dead, and ascended to heaven which was witnessed by many.
(18)	Krishna is called the "shepherd god" and "lord of lords," and was considered "the redeemer, firstborn, sin bearer, liberator, universal Word."
(19)	He is the second person of the trinity, and proclaimed himself the "resurrection" and the "way to the Father."
(20)	He was considered the "beginning, the middle and the end," ("alpha and omega"), as well as being omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent.
(21)	His disciples bestowed upon him the title "Jezeus," meaning "pure essence."
(22)	Krishna is to return again riding a white horse to do battle with the "prince of evil," who will desolate the earth.

As Lord Jesus Christ said, we should hate the sin, not the sinner. That is a very nice statement, because the sinner is under illusion. He is mad. If we hate him, how can we deliver him? Therefore, those who are advanced devotees, who are really servants of God, do not hate anyone. When Lord Jesus Christ was being crucified, he said, "My God, forgive them. They know not what they do." This is the proper attitude of an advanced devotee. He understands that the conditioned souls cannot be hated, because they have become mad due to their materialistic way of thinking. In this Krsna consciousness movement, there is no question of hating anyone. Everyone is welcomed to come and chant Hare Krsna, take krsna-prasada, listen to the philosophy of Bhagavad-gita, and try to rectify material, conditioned life. This is the essential program of Krsna consciousness.

Christian, Muhammadan, Hindu-it doesn't matter. If he is simply speaking on behalf of God, he is a guru. Lord Jesus Christ, for instance. He canvassed people, saying, "Just try to love God." Anyone-it doesn't matter who-be he Hindu, Muslim, or Christian, is a guru if he convinces people to love God. That is the test. The guru never says, "I am God," or "I will make you God." The real guru says, "I am a servant of God, and I will make you a servant of God also." It doesn't matter how the guru is dressed. As Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Whoever can impart knowledge about Krsna is a spiritual master." A genuine spiritual master simply tries to get people to become devotees of Krsna, or God. He has no other business.

So Lord Jesus Christ said, "My Lord, hallowed be Thy name." He wants to glorify the name of the Lord. And some people says that there is no name of God. How? If Lord Jesus Christ says "Hallowed by Thy name," there must be name. The name is there, but he did not pronounce it because the people at that time will not be able to understand or maybe some reason, but he says there is name. So we are making this propaganda, Krsna consciousness movement, the "Hallowed by Thy name. My Lord Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, let Your holy name be glorified." This is our movement. Sometimes Sri Krsna descends Himself, and sometimes He sends His representative. The major religions of the world-Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and Moslem-believe in some supreme authority or personality coming down from the kingdom of God. In the Christian religion, Jesus Christ claimed to be the son of God and to be coming from the kingdom of God to reclaim conditioned souls. As followers of Bhagavad-gita, we admit this claim to be true. So basically there is no difference of opinion. In details there may be differences due to differences in culture, climate and people, but the basic principle remains the same-that is, God or His representatives come to reclaim conditioned souls.

Just like Lord Jesus Christ. He was so badly treated and still he was thinking, "Father, they do not know what they are doing. Please excuse." This is suhrdah. He is praying to God This is sadhu, mahatma. Suhrdah prasanta. Not that... In India there are examples like Haridasa Thakura, Prahlada Maharaja. And the Western countries also, Lord Jesus Christ, he is saktyavesa-avatara, God's son. And he tolerated so much. These are the examples of mahatma. Don't misunderstand that we are preaching that mahatmas are only in India. No. By the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead there are mahatmas even amongst the birds, even amongst the beasts, even amongst the lower than animals. Conversation with Father Emmanuel - In 1974, near ISKCON's center in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany, Srila Prabhupada and several of his disciples took a morning walk with father Emmanuel Jungclaussen, a Benedictine monk from Niederalteich Monastery. Noticing that Srila Prabhupada was carrying meditation beads similar to the rosary, Father Emmanuel explained that he also chanted a constant prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, be merciful unto us." Jesus Christ Was a Guru - The spiritual leader of the Hare Krsna movement here recognizes Lord Jesus Christ as "the son of God, the representative of God... our guru... our spiritual master," yet he has some sharp words for those who currently claim to be Christ's followers...

A devotee of Krsna is friendly to everyone. Therefore it is said here that he has no enemy (nirvairah). How is this? A devotee situated in Krsna consciousness knows that only devotional service to Krsna can relieve a person from all the problems of life. He has personal experience of this, and therefore he wants to introduce this system, Krsna consciousness, into human society. There are many examples in history of devotees of the Lord who risked their lives for the spreading of God consciousness. The favorite example is Lord Jesus Christ. He was crucified by the nondevotees, but he sacrificed his life for spreading God consciousness. Of course, it would be superficial to understand that he was killed. Similarly, in India also there are many examples, such as Thakura Haridasa and Prahlada Maharaja. Why such risk? Because they wanted to spread Krsna consciousness, and it is difficult. A Krsna conscious person knows that if a man is suffering it is due to his forgetfulness of his eternal relationship with Krsna. Therefore, the highest benefit one can render to human society is relieving one's neighbor from all material problems. In such a way, a pure devotee is engaged in the service of the Lord. Now, we can imagine how merciful Krsna is to those engaged in His service, risking everything for Him. Therefore it is certain that such persons must reach the supreme planet after leaving the body.

The popular Indian tourist city Jaipur was hit with a series of bomb blasts on Tuesday resulting in over 80 people dead. Outside of the troubled regions of Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East, this is the tenth terror bombing in India targeting civilians since 2005. In what is now all too familiar, blame game and finger pointing have started after these blasts as well. While the law enforcements promise to deliver, Indians have increasingly becoming more insecure at the moment when they are poised to play a bigger role internationally.

After each of these blasts Indian authorities have blamed Pakistan or Bangladesh based terrorists for these attacks. While accusing ‘Islamic’ terror groups for these attacks, law enforcement agencies start arresting Muslim youths of the area, in many instances torturing them. None of those arrested have ever proven guilty for any of these terrorist acts.

Indian Muslims were once proudly showcased internationally by the Indian Prime Minister for the fact that they were free from terrorist activities. In 2006 when visiting India, President Bush remarked to his wife that "Not one Indian Muslim has joined Al Qaeda." Since 2005 a new wave of terrorist attacks in India was blamed on Islamic groups originating in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Slowly the blame shifted to Muslims of India because they were thought to be providing local support to these terrorists. Indian Muslims have increasingly come under pressure from the media, law enforcement agencies and right wing Hindu groups.

Indian madrasas became a special focus of attention of these groups. In response, the Darul Uloom at Deoband, one of the oldest and largest seminaries of Islamic learning in the country, recently organized an anti-terrorism conference attended by a large number of Muslims scholars. This gathering issued a fatwa against terrorism, declaring it to be against Islamic teachings. These conferences are now being organized in many parts of the country. This is a sign of desperation and the only thing a powerless community under siege can do.

Many Muslims find it difficult to believe that some among them may have resorted to terrorism. Given that several series of raids and detentions by the state authorities have never resulted in any conviction Muslims of India have reasons to suspect that they are being unfairly targeted.

For their part the Indian intelligence agencies seem to have failed miserably to prevent or solve these terror strikes, a large number of them designed to create tensions between Hindus and Muslims by targeting their places of worship. Since 2006, four mosques and two temples have been targeted. Indian law enforcement agencies have arrested a large number of Muslims after every blast but none of the investigations have so far led to disruption of any terrorist group in India.

In three years, terrorists have struck India in the East, West, South and North. These bombings have been of low to medium intensity blasts. In most of these cases, ammonium nitrate was used as an explosive material, pointing to a local group. RDX, another explosive material, can only be obtained through army contacts or through an international link. Use of easy to obtain ammonium nitrate and the modus operandi of these terror bombings suggest a local group with limited resources.

Terrorists have used bicycles or bags to plant bombs in crowded public places. To increase the impact of their low to medium intensity bombs, terrorists have strategically chosen the targets—mosques on Friday and temples on Tuesday— to kill the maximum number of people. The bombs were packed with metallic objects to increase the lethal power of the explosions. In most cases, some of these bombs have been found unexploded, potentially providing valuable clues to the police. But these clues have not lead to solving of any of these terrorism cases. The intensity or frequency of bombings shows no sign of slowing down pointing to the miserable failure of Indian security agencies.

Muslim and some secular organizations say that these investigations have failed because investigators have been looking for leads in all the wrong places. Some like human rights activist Teesta Setalvad says that linking Islam with terrorism is nothing but a well planned conspiracy against Muslims. They believe that the most to gain from these attacks are extremist Hindu groups, also knows as Hindutva groups, so known for their ideology of Hindutva which claims India is for Hindus. There have been confirmed cases of their involvement in at least some of the blasts. In April 2006, a bomb blast in Nanded, Maharashtra in the house of a Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS, parent body of all Hindutva groups) activist first alerted secular groups to the possibility of their involvement in terror bombings. Two Bajrang Dal members died in that blasts reportedly during making of the bombs. Bajrang Dal is a militant associate of the RSS.

Just last month, Home Minister of India Shivraj Patel informed the Parliament that Maharashtra police, anti-terrorist squad, and India’s premier investigating agency Central Bureau of Investigations have come to the same conclusion that some Bajrang Dal members were involved in Nanded blasts.

In September of the same year, three bombs exploded in Malegaon, a Muslim majority city of Maharashtra. Local witnesses reported recovering a dead body with a fake beard on it, suggesting that terrorist disguised themselves as Muslims to plant the bombs. The bombing was timed to coincide with a Muslim festival when the targeted mosque and the graveyard were full of people.

In June of 2007, a low intensity blast in a Muslim majority area of Assam that killed one and wounded 40 person was initially blamed on Assam militants United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) but in a very unusual statement ULFA denied the responsibility and blamed the RSS for the bombing.

In July of last year, a former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Digvijay Singh, issued a statement that bombs and explosive materials was recovered from RSS sympathizers in that state. He has repeated his statement since and has demanded a ban on Hindutva organizations.

Of all these blasts linked to Hindutva groups, the investigating agencies have not tried to work their way up to the organization to find out the masterminds or the conspiracy. Meanwhile, the blasts have continued; in the south of the country, in January of this year, Tenkasi a small town in Tamilnadu witnessed two bomb blasts—one targeting the local RSS office and another one a bus stop. No one was killed in these attacks but Hindutva groups organized demonstrations to create tension between Hindus and Muslims. The Tamil Nadu police investigated the blasts and arrested seven Hindus as responsible for them. All of them were been found to be RSS activists, and one of them is the General Secretary of a local RSS front, the Hindu Munani.

All this and the continued incidents of terrorist bombings in India have increased the demand for an impartial and effective investigation that looks at all clues and leads. Muslims have long argued that biased investigations have resulted in harassment of Muslims and have not resulted in any positive outcome. The latest bomb blasts in Jaipur are a proof of that.

A group of prominent intellectuals and peace activists, comprising of Asghar Ali Engineer, Ram Puniyani and several others, have demanded that a National Commission be set up to monitor the progress of investigations into these bomb blasts cases. This might help speed up the process of investigations, find valuable clues to catch the culprits, provide justice to the victims, and prevent future attacks.

BANGLADESH:Bombs found in Maitree’s route

Some crude bombs have been found on a rail track through which the Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express will start rolling on Monday, Indian officials said.The bombs were found between Ranaghat and Gede railway stations, north of Kolkata, late on Sunday evening, the officials said.

Bangladesh rail officials were unaware of the "bomb discovery".

"The bombs are crude and are meant to scare, but we are taking no chances," said Dilip Mitra, inspector-general of Railways Safety in Kolkata.Trains between India and Bangladesh are being resumed after 42 years, after they were stopped during the 1965 India-Pakistan war.Indian Intelligence blamed the Nikhil Banga Nagarik Sangha (All Bengal Citizens Group), an organisation of Hindu refugees from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, in planting the bombs.
The group has close links with the Hindu fundamentalist Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh or the RSS. The Sangha has opposed the "friendship express" and called upon their supporters to disrupt it.

"Why should democratic and secular India seek to develop such intimate links with Islamic Bangladesh…?" the Sangha's general secretary Subhas Chakrabarti said in a statement this week.

NEPAL:MILITANT HINDUTVA RAISES ITS UGLY HEAD

Needless to say, not everyone was excited by the 18 May 2006 declaration of secularism. Nepal’s Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) elements, with backing from Hindutva forces in India, immediately increased their intolerant rhetoric and exploited the confusion of the Hindu masses. On 22 May 2006 some 5000 Hindus rallied in Birgunj, a southern town in the “Hindutva belt” on the border with India, protesting the parliament’s resolution to turn Nepal into a secular state. The rallies were organised by activists from the World Hindu Federation (WHF) and Shiv Sena Nepal. The protestors blocked the Tribhuvan highway on the Bara-Parsa industrial belt near the Indian border. Shouting “Jay Shree Ram!” (Lord Ram is great!), they burnt tyres, logs and newspapers that supported the resolution. (See LINK 2)

A group calling itself the Nepal Defense Army (NDA) committed several minor acts of terrorism during 2007, primarily targeting Maoist institutions. It claims it is fighting for Nepal’s reinstatement as a Hindu state.

On the evening of Wednesday 12 March 2008 a bomb exploded in the regional office of Kantipur Publications in Biratnagar, a city some 240 km south-east of Kathmandu in the Hindutva belt on the Indian border. Kantipur, a Nepali news service, reported that the explosion caused no harm to the staff or the office property. “Though it was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, the pamphlets found at the explosion site suggested that ’Nepal Defense Army’ was responsible. The pamphlets read ’Nepal Defense Army for Hindu Kingdom’.” (LINK 3)

MOSQUE BOMBING

On the evening of Saturday 29 March 2008, three powerful bombs ripped through the Sarouchiya Mosque in Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s hometown of Biratnagar. A fourth bomb failed to explode and was later defused. Two locals were killed in the blasts, while two others were hospitalised with critical injuries.

According to Kantipur, “Two unidentified persons, who came on motorcycles, had lobbed four bombs while over 60 persons were busy reciting evening prayers inside the mosque.”An eyewitness, Malik Alam Kuresi, said the unidentified men hurled the four bombs from the gate and fled the scene. ’However, only three of them (bombs) went off immediately.’

“Meanwhile, an underground group — Nepal Defense Army — took responsibility for the blasts. One R P Mainali aka Paribartan, who identified himself as ’supreme commander’ of the group, owned up the group’s involvement in the blast, in a press statement.” (LINK 4)

In a statement sent to media outlets, the Nepal Defense Army vowed it “would continue such attacks until Nepal is reinstated as a Hindu nation.”

The Times of India reported: “Soon after the attacks, Muslims began demonstrations on streets. Fearing a riot, the district administration clamped curfew from Saturday night. When the curfew was lifted in the morning, Muslims called a strike in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts, ignoring [PM] Koirala’s appeal to show restraint.” (LINK 5)

An October 2007 article by Prashant Jha in the Himal SouthAsian entitled “Royal Hindutva — The Hindu right in Nepal is currently down, but not out” provides insight to the relationship between Hindutva forces in Nepal and India. [In fact, Jha’s article makes one wonder: what would it mean for Nepal if India’s BJP won power in India’s 2009 federal elections?]

Concern Nepal, Jha writes: “India’s Hindu right does not like what it sees taking place in Nepal. Angry that the country is headed towards becoming a secular, democratic republic, it can see its traditional influence in Nepali politics waning. A terminal blow has now been dealt to the two pillars central to what the Hindutva-wallahs have cherished about Nepal: a Hindu rashtra [state] with a Hindu monarchy.”But Hindutva leaders from both India and Nepal have not given up. They have been brainstorming — at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in New Delhi, the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur, and at the residence of royalist politicians in Kathmandu — as well as with King Gyanendra at the Narayanhiti Palace. However, the Indian and Nepali Hindu right recognises the limits of its capacity, and does not have a clear rescue plan as yet [Oct 07]. . ." (LINK 6)

Maybe the recent mosque bombing in Biratnagar signals a shift in Hindutva strategy. Perhaps the Hindutva agenda will be advanced, not through riots or minor acts of terrorism against Maoists and journalists, but, as in India, through the fomenting of sectarian strife.

India has dismissed Pakistani allegations that it was involved in a train bomb explosion which Islamabad says killed 22 people and left 36 injured.


The bomb turned the carriage into a mangled wreck. Owen Bennett-Jones reports.

The Pakistani authorities said the time bomb went off in the early hours of the morning as the Karachi to Peshawar train approached Khairpur in the southern province of Sindh.

It exploded in a packed train carriage while most of the passengers were asleep, according to an official.

The blast was so powerful it brought the train to a halt

Although no group has admitted responsibility for the bomb, the Pakistani authorities told the BBC they had "unimpeachable" evidence it was the work of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of the Hindu extremists intelligence service rss.

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- A devoted Christian pastor in India's state of Andhra Pradesh was still suffering of injuries Wednesday, April 2, after Hindu militants stormed his house, the latest in a series of attacks against church leaders and other believers across India, an advocacy group said.

The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) said 35-year old Pastor Hanock Sanjeev, a former Hindu from the town of Asifabad, was beaten Saturday, March 29, by activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or 'National Volunteers Organization', a hard-line Hindu group.

"A group of four RSS activists entered forcibly into Pastor Hanok's house and started beating him with sticks before leaving the place. He went to the hospital and was back in the evening after treatment. He still has pain in his chest region," GCIC said.

Just two days earlier in the same state Hindu militants attacked and severely injured the grandparents and aunt of a 15-year-old girl in the village of Bahera, when the Christian family stopped the mob from raping her, Christians said. It came after nine Hindu militants reportedly demanded that the father of the girl, Brij Gopal Saket, turn over his daughter, Urmila, so that they could abuse her. Saket apparently refused to hand her over and locked himself, his wife and daughter inside their home.

The militants, who had reportedly threatened other local Christians with violence for worshipping Christ, then grabbed Saket's parents and his sister who were outside the house and beat them with rods, sticks and stones, according to local sources.

They were the latest victims of an apparent new wave of anti-Christian launched by Hindu and Islamic militants since Good Friday, March 21, when militants entered the house of Peerzada Shakeel, a convert to Christianity from Islam, and dragged him to the mosque “to say his Muslim prayers," Christians said.

"FALSE CHARGES"

He was reportedly detained along with his wife Arifa in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, after his father and other Muslims brought “false charges” against related to him "forced conversions," Indian Christians said. He were released the next day, but reportedly still under house arrest Wednesday, April 2.

The Good Friday violence in Jammu and Kashmir spread to other areas of India during Easter, rights investigators said, including in Karnataka's state capital of Bangalore and in Shimoga district, where Hindu militants reportedly stormed two Easter Sunday services, beating at least 16 Christians, including two pastors.

In one of the attacks, a mob of over 150 intolerant Hindus on Sunday, March 23, launched an attack on a Pentecostal church in Karnataka's Shimoga district in the morning, while a group of over a dozen assailants struck Christians of an independent church in Byapanahalli on the suburbs of Bangalore, said the GCIC in a statement. Accusing the Pentecostal church of "forced" conversions, the attackers allegedly beat 35-year-old pastor Mandya Nagraj and five others, besides vandalizing church property.

In Byapanahalli in Bangalore, some 12 “extremists led by a Hindu priest” and an associate attacked the Grace Almighty Full Gospel Church. The assailants beat Pastor P. Isaac and nine believers, including a 17-year-old girl, the GCIC added.

POLICE REFUSAL

Although police apparently refused to register a complaint against Pastor Isaac for "forced" conversions, the pastor has been pressured to leave the area. Christians said. Violence was also reported around Easter in the state of Madhya Pradesh, where reportedly seven RSS activists interrupted the evening service of a house church in Bherugarh village, beating believers with stones and sticks. The owner of the house, Bhurji Dindore of the Shalom Mission group and his wife were reportedly seriously injured. The attackers also took away Bibles and Christian literature and destroyed the house’s roof, Christians explained.

Instead of taking action against attackers, police reportedly detained the pastor and Dindore last week, before releasing them on a 1,200 rupees ($30) bail. Police officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The Easter violence came after Hindu militants already threatened and attacked Christians, including nuns, earlier in the month.

On March 15 an angry Hindu mob attacked and sexually assaulted two Catholic nuns in the coastal town of Alibaug in Maharashtra state, the GCIC and India media reported. Sister Mercy Tuscano and Sister Philomena D’Mello, were reportedly preparing to hold a women’s empowerment program to spread AIDS awareness among tribal people when the attack occurred.

A day earlier in the Indian state of Karnataka activists the Hindu group Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) allegedly disrupted a Christian program entitled “Miracle” held March 14 at a playground in Koramangala area of Bangalore, injuring several Christians, the GCIC said. Police said KRV “extremists” accused preachers of “mass conversion.” Indian media reported. Police detained some 20 suspects, said GCIC President Sajan K. George in published comments. There whereabouts were not immediately clear Wednesday April 2.

PREACHERS ATTACKED

Attacks against preachers reportedly already began March 9 when in the state of Madhya Pradesh Hindu RSS militants “beat pastor Tulsi Ram and had him arrested on false charges of forced conversion on March 11 in the town of Shajapur. He was reportedly dragged to the police station on charges of “forced conversions” and beaten before and during police custody. He released March 14, on bail.

Also on March 9 in Karnataka state Hindu nationalist of the RSS group disrupted a worship service in a rented home in the Davangare area, “severely beating” the gathered Christians, with one believer requiring hospitalization for internal injuries, GCIC said. Pastor Philemon Babu reportedly said that among the 25 people attending Sunday morning worship was a new person fidgeting with his mobile phone.

"Suddenly at around 11:30 a.m., around 30 extremists barged into the assembly shouting Hindu devotional chants, ‘Jai Shri Ram [Hail god Rama]. They began slapping and hitting the believers, snatched Bibles from their hands and tore them. They made false accusations of [forced] conversion and played the recording of my sermon, which the newcomer had recorded on his mobile phone.”

Cursing the Christians, the Hindu extremists beat up several of them, with evangelist Jobin Varghese repeatedly struck and another identified only as Nagaranjan hospitalized with internal injuries. The Hindus allegedly warned Christians of “more serious consequences” if worship services continue in the future. The pastor has been ordered to leave his home and no Sunday worship has been held since, said GCIC President George.

Nepal: Militant Hindutva raises its ugly head

as historic elections approach.

On Thursday 10 April, Nepalis will vote in historic constituent assembly elections. And this is no routine election — it is the culmination of three years of upheaval and peace process. The constituent assembly elected on 10 April will draft the new secular constitution which will replace the 1990 Constitution which describes Nepal as a Hindu Kingdom.

BACKGROUND

On 1 February 2005 Nepal’s King Gyanendra, backed by the Nepalese Army, dismissed the Prime Minister and his government and seized absolute power in a bloodless coup. Anti-monarchy sentiment subsequently soared and in November 2005 the previously disparate opposition parties joined forces to form the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) in opposition to direct, totalitarian royal rule.

In April 2006, crippling mass demonstrations in Kathmandu ultimately forced King Gyanendra to step down and hand power to SPA. The Maoists then declared a ceasefire. On 18 May 2006 Nepal’s new parliament publicly declared that Nepal would no longer be a Hindu Kingdom but would now be a secular state. An interim government was formed that included the Maoists.

On 21 November 2006 the Maoists and the SPA signed a Comprehensive Peace Agreement committed to advancing human rights and equity, bringing to an end the decade-long civil conflict. Constituent assembly elections were slated for June 2007, after which a new Constitution would be drafted. (See LINK 1)

Various setbacks, including insecurity and political fractures with the Maoist, forced the postponement of the elections in June 2007 and then again in November 2007.

Over recent months various anti-democratic, anti-secular and marginalised ethnic groups have been escalating their protests, militancy, and violent intimidation of voters in the run-up to the historic elections, forcing Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to appeal to all political parties to put an end to the violence.

Security has been bolstered and some 135,000 police are being deployed to polling booths in Nepal’s 240 constituencies. There is also considerable concern that after the elections, powerful, armed, not-so-democratic losers might undo Nepal’s tentative peace.

RESEARCH & FACT FINDING REPORT BASED ON VISITS TO KANDHAMAL, ORISSA IN THE AFTERMATH OF ANTI-CHRISTIAN ATTACKS Jan. 7, 2008 PREFACE: From January 3-5, 2008, a second fact finding team from the All India Christian Council (aicc) Orissa chapter surveyed extensively and visited all the villages and places in Orissa attacked since December 24, 2007. Team members included: Rev. Dr. Pran Ranjan Parichha, aicc Orissa Chapter General Secretary; Mr. Harish Chandra Arisalya, Regional Manager for Dalit Education in Orissa; Rev. Abhiram Keshari Singh, Associate Secretary, aicc Balasore District Chapter; Rev. Samaresh Naik., Secretary, aicc Balasore District Chapter. They found that the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) instigated the attacks and carefully targeted Christians throughout Kandhamal District, Orissa. Most of the Christians were Dalits. Those who are missing in the villages may be alive in the forests or at nearby villages, or killed and their dead bodies are taken away or kept secret by the VHP cadre. This truth can never be ruled out. During our visit we have interviewed and found names of four confirmed dead. 1. Bhogra Naik – Male – 50+ years – village Barkhama. I have visited his broken house and met with his eldest son. Photograph of his son is available. He was a Christian and killed by the VHP cadre. 2. Tileshwar Mistri – Male – 42 years – village Kasupanka GP, Hatimunda. He was killed by the VHP mob. 3. Rajesh – Male – 22 years - from Alanjori GP. Christian young man killed by the VHP mob. 4. Kundan Mantri – Male – 21 years – Jholasahi village. Died of firing (gunshot). The VHP cadre is making all efforts to hide / destroy dead bodies of Christians killed by them to avoid death record. B. Total no. of houses set on fire and completely destroyed:- 730 (In Barkhama village alone:- 415 houses.) In most of the villages the VHP miscreants not only destroyed the houses but looted gold jewelry, cash, and valuables. They did not spare ladies. Whomever they caught, they molested. D. Many of them had tied a yellow ribbon on their heads and put vermillion on their foreheads. F. VHP LEADERS:- Based on our research, the following people/groups were behind the attacks. 1. Chitta Bindhani – this man is not a local. He is not from Kandhamal district. He is actually from Jajpur district which is part of the coastal belt. This belt is the stronghold of VHP. 2. Bhagaban Panda – VHP leader of Kandhamal who co-masterminded this operation. Both were staying adjacent to Hanuman Mandir at Balliguda town. They are not locals but settled in Kandhamal and have been instigating threats against innocent tribals and Dalits for some time. 3. Kui Samaj - local leaders of the alliance of VHP which agitates for caste and reservation status for the Kui speaking people. G. DISTURBING FACTS ABOUT THE ATTACKS:- FACT - 1. BARKHAMA CHRISTIANS SUFFER GREATEST ATTACK Barkhama is a village about 12 kms away from Balliguda town sub division in Kandhamal. This village has Hindu majority but there are 450 Christian families. Out of 450, 415 houses belonging to Christians were completely smashed. This village has 7 churches of different denominations. All churches had well constructed buildings and six of the seven were seriously damaged. FACT – 2. POLICE INACTION AT BARKHAMA Barkhama village was attacked two times – on 24th & 25th December 2007. The sub division police head office is only about 12 kms away at Balliguda. But the police came only on the 25th night at 11 pm. They took no action but remained as silent spectators and went back. This was the exact repetition of the Gujarat carnage and its methodology. At Daringbadi, people also witnessed police watching vandalism silently as if they are watching a Hindi movie. This also was reported in Baminigaon. These are clear examples of police helping the VHP in the operation. FACT – 3. CONSPIRACY TO HIDE DEAD BODIES We believe there is a conspiracy to hide the bodies of Christians killed by the VHP cadre in order to destroy evidence of deaths in the Christian community. Many are missing -- both adults and children -- in every village. FACT – 4. PLACE OF WORSHIP VS. CREMATION OF THE DEAD Every year at Barkhama village, all the 7 churches join together and conduct a combined Christmas Eve & Christmas Day service on open ground belonging to the church. This year just as the service was over on Christmas Eve the VHP cadre attacked the congregation. They burnt the pulpit and ransacked the church buildings. On that day an old Hindu person had died naturally. In order to desecrate the place of worship of Christians the VHP cadre brought the dead body and cremated right in front of the pulpit. The ashes of the dead body remain there until today. We have a photograph. Yesterday, 6th Jan the Hindu community had a puja (worship) to mark the 10th day of the death. [Due to curfews and other restrictions, the celebration was delayed slightly.] This was not at the church ground but was intended as an insult and disrespect to the faith of the Christian community. FACT – 5. FIRST DEATH Bhogra Naik, a Christian, was killed and his body cut into three pieces. I talked to his son, Bipse Naik, and visited his destroyed house. The dead body was retrieved by his family and buried on his own land. FACT – 6. PASTOR ADAM NAIK: EYE WITNESS Pastor Adam Naik of Barkhama village was the chief speaker of that combined Christmas service. He ran for his life and is alive today. We talked to him over the phone. Both Bhogra Naik and Adam Naik were running for their lives. But Bhogra Naik could not run fast enough and succumbed to death by the VHP cadre. Adam Naik saw Bhogra brutally killed and heard him screaming for help. FACT – 7. PASTOR'S WIFE MISSING OR DEAD Pastor Krushna Chandra Digal and his family with three kids left home and ran for their lives. All went to the nearby forest in different directions with the crowd. They lost track of each other. After two days in the forest, the pastor started searching for his family. One by one he found his three children but till today his wife, Mrs. Sabita Digal, is missing. She might be killed or alive -- nobody knows. This is only one example, and there are more people. This is the reason no one can give now a definite figure on the death toll. FACT – 8. NO MEN AT BAMINIGAON VILLAGE Baminigaon village was the epicenter of this violence against Christians. Today you will see only women at the village and relief camps, but no men. All the men have gone into hiding in the forest to save their lives and to avoid the police, atrocity, or arrest. Nobody knows how many of them are alive in the forests. FACT – 9. TIGER & BEAR SIGHTED IN JUNGLE The people of Barkhama ran for their lives to the nearby jungle (forest). The name of the jungle is Kade Dangar Hill. Many families stayed for 3 nights in the jungle. Some slept under trees and behind huge rocks. It was difficult to manage in the cold of the season. Two times they saw tigers passing by and once a bear passed by. People spent the nights unharmed. This was the testimony of Pastor Lalit's wife, Mrs.Sadhaban. She was with her 4th standard girl, Rolly. FACT – 10. LICKING LEAVES FOR WATER During their stay in the forest, people did not get water to drink. Adults managed but kids were helpless. So they licked the dew on the leaves of plants and trees to quench their thirst. The children survived and returned to villages, but many asked what is the government doing to help? FACT – 11. MEDIA REPORTS Except NDTV and ETV, the TV and print media did not seem aware of the facts. They were giving biased reports, figures, and stories from VHP sources. There was no impartial report and "news" in the true sense of the term. The ETV reporter went to the forest and covered the condition of the people hiding there. Immediately he was shifted to other place by the media. The name of the reporter is Mr.Panda. Thus, we request people to please do not rely on the facts & figure of the media. CHURCH VANDALISED AND GOAT KILLED In Baminigaon, the epicenter of the violence, the VHP cadre attacked the Roman Catholic church and all the adjacent houses of the priest & nuns. They took away one goat from a Christian family and butchered it to get the blood. The whole mob used that blood for Tilaks (forehead marking) and shouted "Jai Bajarangbali" [Hail Bajrang Dali! – the VHP youth wing] and "Jai Shriram" [Hail Shriram! – a Hindu deity]. Later, with that blood mark on their foreheads, they started attacking & looting other Christian houses. FACT – 13. HOLY COMMUNION TRAMPLED While destroying the Roman Catholic church building and attacking those inside, they brought out the holy communion elements – bread, grape juice, containers, and distribution cups. They crushed these articles under their feet. This is a great barbaric and insulting act. FACT – 14. RECONVERSION PLOT – TONSURED – GOAT BLOOD Under Balliguda tehsil is Kutikia GP. The Christian families are very few in number here. There was a small church that was attacked. The pastor, Rev. Kalia Mani Digal, and 12 Christians were forcibly taken to a field and were tonsured (heads shaved) because they refused to deny their Christian faith. Later all of them were told to eat raw rice mixed with goat blood in order to become Hindus. FACT – 15. OFFICIAL PERMISSION OBTAINED The youth wing of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Banik Sangha at Baminigaon applied to the government authorities and obtained the required permission to hold worship & meetings with P.A. system and a stage on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In spite of that, the minority Christian community was attacked. FACT – 16. WHO IS THIS LAKHMANANDA SARASWATI He is not a tribal from Kondhmal district. He hails from a small village near Talcher of Dhenkanal district which is in the central part of Orissa. He murdered someone in his locality and had a fight in his family, then he ran away. Many years ago, Kondhmal was a peaceful district with tribals and Dalits. This man took shelter here and joined the VHP. He established an ashram at Chakkapada and became the mouthpiece of the VHP for Kondhmal. FACT - 17. ONLY CHRISTIAN HOUSES WERE CAREFULLY DESTROYED Their (VHP) strategy was so meticulous that if a Christian office (i.e. World Vision) was in a rented house of a Hindu, they did not attack that house but brought out everything on the road and then set it on fire. H. POLICE RESPONSE:- In all the villages we have visited, people testify that the attacks, destruction and looting was done in the presence of police. Police did not prevent the situation and they could have taken action. There was one exception. In Balliguda town there was a police sub-inspector from the Christian community. He used to warn the Christian community of Barkhama village of a possible attack by the VHP. Even on that fateful day (Dec. 24, 2007) he told the pastors to leave the village and run for their lives. Next day the said inspector was transferred. Even today we believe the police are shielding the VHP cadre. I. THE SCENARIO TODAY:- The present situation in most villages is like a man-made desert. Everywhere there are heaps of ashes, charcoal, and broken pieces. People cannot believe the VHP's:- • well planned attack • organized vandalism • pre-planned looting, arson & robbery • meticulous destruction • local police as silent spectators • sheer devastation • quick destruction • barbaric mutilation The situation right now feels like after a war. During this winter people will now be deprived of a roof above their heads. If you make a round through the villages, you will feel & hear testimony from victims that one of the following things is true: a) India is not a democratic country or b) there is at least no rule of law in this place c) or Hindu fundamentalists are on the ruling throne of the nation Many are still in hiding or missing, and there is still much fear. We appeal for assistance and justice in light of these horrible events from Dec. 24, 2007, til now, Jan. 7, 2008.

Hindu RSS Fanatics Attack Pastor

A pastor has been beaten up by a group of Hindu radicals. According to a story on the web site www.persecution.in, the assault occurred on the evening of March 11 in Madhya Pradesh, India.

When leaving his house, Pastor Tulsi, 26, was attacked by members of a Hindu militant group called RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).

According to the web site, when he was assaulted Tulsi (who works for an Indian evangelical team), was holding a copy of Jesus Calls magazine and his organization’s brochure.

The story on www.persecution.in said the Hindu militants snatched the material from Tulsi and started to beat him up. Later the radicals took Tulsi to an area police station where the story said they locked him up, claiming that Tulsi was converting people to Christianity by force.

The story on the web site said that area believers attempted to see Tulsi but were refused permission. They were told that police needed to talk to RSS leaders before granting any visits to see Tulsi, as they feared trouble from members of the militant Hindu sect.

According to www.persecution.in Tulsi was made to forced to sign his name on blank pieces of paper. That, the story said, would enable either the police or the Hindu radicals to say he was engaging in forced conversions.

Tulsi was apparently told that if he renounces his faith he would be immediately released, but he refused.

The writer of the story asked that people pray for Tulsi.

Intolerant Hindus Attack Easter Services in India

Assaults on two churches mar celebrations in Karnataka state.

NEW DELHI, Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) extremists stormed two Easter Sunday services and beat at least 16 Christians, including two pastors, in the Karnataka state capital of Bangalore and in Shimoga district.

A mob of more than 150 intolerant Hindus on Sunday (March 23) launched an attack on a Pentecostal church in Karnataka’s Shimoga district at 9 a.m., and a group of more than a dozen assailants struck Christians of an independent church in Byapanahalli on the suburbs of Bangalore at 11:45 a.m., reported the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC).

“About 150 Hindutva radicals armed with sticks stormed the Indian Pentecostal Church in Gundlikoppa village, around 20 kilometers from Shimoga district headquarters, while the believers were attending the Easter service,” Dr. Sajan K. George, GCIC’s national president, told Compass.

Accusing the church of “forced” conversions without any evidence for the charge, the attackers beat 35-year-old pastor Mandya Nagraj and five others, besides vandalizing church property, George added. The assailants damaged the roof and musical instruments.

Pastor Nagraj had received a threat a week earlier, added George.

Police arrested six of the attackers and provided protection to the pastor after GCIC’s intervention. The Pentecostal church, attended by around 60 Christians, has been functioning for six years with no evidence of attempting to convert people by force or fraud.

Girl Beaten

In the second attack, George said at least 12 extremists led by the Hindu priest of a local temple and his associate, identified only as Puttappa, attacked the Grace Almighty Full Gospel Church in Byapanahalli in Bangalore.

The assailants beat 30-year-old pastor P. Isaac and nine believers, including a 17-year-old girl identified only as Jency. The girl was rushed to a hospital for first-aid.

Following the attack, the assailants went to the homes of a few believers and warned them against attending the church. They also took Pastor Isaac to the police station and sought to register a complaint against him for “forced” conversions. Police interrogated the pastor and subsequently released him.

But police brokered a “compromise” between the attackers and the pastor requiring him to leave the area.

The independent church was established around seven years ago, and has more than 60 members.

Karnataka came under the President’s rule on November 20 last year, when the ruling coalition comprising the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) party and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) broke up. Legislative elections are expected to be announced soon.

Christian persecution rose to new heights in the state after the BJP and JD-S came to power in February 2006.

There are a little more than 1 million Christians in Karnataka, which is home to over 52.8 million people.

Holiday Attacks

Attacks on Christian holidays are becoming increasingly common in India.

Hindutva extremists beat two pastors of Believers’ Church on Easter last year (April 8) in Salwa village in Madhya Pradesh state’s Mandla district. They arrived at the house of the pastors, Dinesh Toppo and Chandan Chhinchani, to launch the assault.

Similarly, on Christmas Eve of 2007, Hindutva extremists led a series of violent attacks on Christians and their property in Orissa state’s Kandhamal district.

The attacks, lasting more than a week, killed six Christians and razed at least 730 houses and 95 churches, according to a fact-finding team of the All India Christian Council’s Orissa chapter. Hundreds of displaced Christians remained in relief camps set up by the Orissa government at press time. (See Compass Direct News, “Two More Victims of Violence Succumb to Injuries in Orissa,” February 20.)

The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) told BosNewsLife that the Hindu militants were part of an angry mob of some 100 people who last week attacked the nuns near their St. Mary convent in Alibag, just outside Mumbai.

One of the two victims, identified only as Sister Mercy, returned two the convent after spending five days at Alibag Civil Hospital, but she struggles to overcome the trauma of the sexual abuse, the well-informed GCIC said. "I told them, 'kill me, don't leave me half-dead, if you must, then kill me'," she recalled in remarks published by GCIC. "They pushed me against the wire, and hit me, then threw me to the ground," she reportedly said.

It came on the heels of a report detailing 142 religiously-motivated attacks on Christian targets in 2007, although it acknowledged the real total may be "much higher." The report, issued by Britain-based Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), specifically cited deadly clashes in India's Orissa State over the Christmas period of 2007, described by rights watchers as the "largest attack on the Christian community in the history of democratic India."

Human Rights group releases report on anti-Christian violence in 2007 as UN Special Rapporteur warns of rising communal divisions in India

A report documenting the high rate of religiously-motivated violence against Christians in India during 2007 has been released by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW). The report was released as the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief concluded her 17-day visit to India.

At a press conference in New Delhi last week, UN Rapporteur, Asma Jahangir, warned that communal divisions seem to have increased in India during the past decade and called on the Indian government to address this growing problem.

CSW’s report provides details of 142 religiously-motivated attacks on Christian targets in 2007, although it acknowledges that the real total may be much higher. It also provides a summary and analysis of the outbreak of severe communal violence, predominantly against Christians, in Orissa over the Christmas period. This episode was described by CSW partners, the All India Christian Council (AICC) as « the largest attack on the Christian community in the history of democratic India. » The highest recorded rate of separate incidents was in Karnataka state.

The report links the anti-Christian violence to an « anti-conversion culture, » rooted in the extremist Hindu nationalist ideology of Hindutva. This culture is also reflected in anti-conversion laws, currently in force in four states and on the statute books in three states. A new anti-conversion bill is due to be discussed in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly today.

The report criticizes pervasive police inaction or complicity with regard to anti-Christian violence, especially in the states of Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. In some cases, police arrested the Christian victims of attacks instead of their assailants, and a number of attacks on Christians by police officers were also recorded.

The report also highlights that religious freedom for Dalits is damaged by the religious conditionality attached to eligibility for the affirmative action-style system of ‘reservations’ designed to address the social exclusion of Dalits. Those who adopt Christianity or Islam lose their eligibility for these rights.

Attack on Bar by Hindu extremists widely condemned in IHK

Srinagar, March 19 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the assault on Kashmiri lawyers by a mob of Hindu extremists outside Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu has triggered severe condemnation from various political, religious, and social organizations. The lawyers on Monday had gone to visit detainees on the orders of High Court to see if they needed any legal help.

The All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC), while condemning the attack, termed it a vain attempt by Hindu fanatics to put a cover on the atrocities and excesses being perpetrated on the Kashmiri detainees languishing in different jails of Jammu and India.

“The attack on lawyers cannot be termed as an aberration as the Hindu extremists have attacked various pro-movement leaders in the past,” said the APHC spokesman. He flayed the puppet administration for not taking any action against the assailants, adding, “The authorities have demonstrated state terrorism albeit in a different form.”

Senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani termed the act of Hindu Chauvinists as fascism. “The attack on lawyers reflects the extent of danger to the life of Kashmiri prisoners in jails,” said Gilani. He appealed to the International Committee of Red Cross to take serious notice of it and play its role in getting the detainees shifted to Valley to ensure security to their life.

The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) termed the attack a vile tactic by the superintendent Kot Bhalwal Jail. The JKLF has warned of serious consequences if the assailants were not arrested and brought to justice and appealed to all the Muslim and democratic countries to exert pressure on India to stop atrocities on people in occupied Kashmir.

Comdemning the attack, the patron of Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi, Muhammad Azam Inqalabi said that such Hindu extremists had massacred lakhs of Muslims in Jammu in 1947.

The Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM) at a meeting held at its head office in Srinagar and presided over by its chairman Zaffar Akbar Bhat strongly condemned the attack on lawyers. “This attack on lawyers has proved it beyond any doubt that the Hindu chauvinists enjoyed the patronage and support of the administration and police in Jammu, Zaffar said.

The Secretary General of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League termed the attack a handiwork of Indian secret agencies and added that the attack had debunked India’s claims of being a democratic country.

Christians Forced to 'Reconvert' in Himachal Pradesh by RSS Fanatics,

3/4/08 New Delhi (International Christian Concern) - Reports of Christians being forced to convert back to Hinduism from the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, where an "anti-conversion" law was recently passed that prohibits forcible conversion. Nevertheless, the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which came into power two months ago, does not appear to see any problem with forcible "reconversions" of Christians to Hinduism.

At least 60 Christian families were reportedly "reconverted" by organizations linked to the BJP in the last week alone, which, according to the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI), is the tip of the iceberg.

The EFI said in a statement that one Pastor Ram Lal and his wife were reconverted in a ceremony organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP or World Hindu Council) on February 27 in the Rampur area of Shimla district.

The extremists first tried to induce Pastor Lal by offering Rs.15,000 ($400) a year in exchange for preaching Hinduism, instead of Christianity. But after he refused to do so, they threatened to kill him or put him behind bars by lodging a false complaint. Under duress, he finally underwent a ritual to convert to Hinduism.

"It is better for me to die than to leave Jesus. But I was under so much pressure," the release quoted Pastor Lal as saying to the Christian Legal Association (CLA).

Pastor Lal's "reconversion" came just days after over 60 families were "reconverted" to Hinduism at a ceremony in the Satyanarayan Temple in Rampur, and one day before RSS and VHP extremists approached other Christians, asking them to install idols of Hindu gods in their homes. But, these families did not heed their demands, and as a result the extremists "reconverted" them forcibly, said the release.

The atmosphere in Rampur area was "very tense" at press time.

From Deception to Force

Extremist groups started a reconversion drive in Himachal Pradesh about a year ago. However, what began as a deceptive movement last February under rule of the Congress party has now turned overtly forceful with the BJP's coming to power late last December.

In March 2007, a fact-finding team of the All India Christian Council (AICC) recorded testimonies of Dalit families who said they were made to sign papers not knowing that the papers were documents requesting "reconversion" to Hinduism in Sirmaur district on March 21, 2007, according to a report in Hindi language daily Punjab Kesari.

Prior to the reconversion drive, the extremists launched a virulent anti-Christian campaign to suggest that missionaries were alluring poor Hindus to Christianity. In 2005, the local edition of a Hindi language daily, Dainik Jagran, carried a series of articles highlighting allegations made by extremists against Christians, as highlighted in ICC's press release on May 15, 2007 (Deceitful Propaganda Led to Himachal Pradesh Anti-Conversion Law).

Law that Bans Forced Conversion Doesn't Prohibit Forced Reconversion?

Himachal Pradesh has a special law banning conversion by the use of "force, inducement or fraudulent means." But the law excludes "reconversions" implicitly by stating that a conversion by unfair means shall not be recognized as such. Extremist groups, who are linked to the governing party, assert that Christian organizations give financial benefits for conversions, and thus conversions to Christianity do not count as true conversions.

The anti-conversion law was passed by the Congress party, which claims to respect religious freedom. However, in the face of the December 2007 elections which Congress was afraid of losing to the radical BJP, the party switched positions on the issue of conversion to try to win back votes. The BJP still defeated the Congress.

Despite the hypocrisy of the "anti-conversion" laws, there are sections in the Indian Penal Code concerning hurting religious feelings and creating animosity among religious denominations that could be applied against the forced reconversions. However, the police, under pressure from the government, hesitate to file cases against extremist groups linked to the ruling party.

"Complaints are filed only against Christian preachers, and that without evidence of conversion by unfair means, but no action is taken against the Hindu extremists who openly force Christians to convert. What would you call it, if not hypocrisy?" asked Tehmina Arora, general secretary of the CLA.

There are less than 8,000 Christians in Himachal Pradesh, according to the Government of India's figures.

Assaults over “conversion” charges leave three Christians severely injured.

INDORE, India, February 25 (Compass Direct News) – At least 125 Hindu extremists here yesterday attacked one of the oldest and best-known churches in Madhya Pradesh state, Masihi Mandir Church, brutally beating one of the fleeing members.

The assault followed an attack in Kosmi of the state’s Balaghat district on Friday (February 22) in which a mob of Hindu extremists dragged at least four people from a home where Christians were meeting and beat them with bamboo poles, rods and belts.

In Indore, the mob from the Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bajrang Dal arrived at 2:30 p.m. as the third of the church’s four Sunday services was about to begin, forcibly making their way into the church compound angrily shouting slogans.

“They came on Jeeps,” said eyewitness James Daniel, “beating drums and shouting slogans in Hindi, ‘He who talks in favor of only Hindus will rule the nation’ and, ‘Stop conversions.’”

The 15 Christians at the church immediately vacated the building and locked it from outside. The mob broke the windows of the church, shattering all window panes and destroying two expensive chandeliers before to damaging a cross outside.

Daniel told Compass that one of the church members had overheard members of the mob say that if they were able to break the church doors down, they would set it on fire. He added that they were armed with petrol bombs.

The Hindu extremists caught a Christian college student and beat him severely. He has requested anonymity to avoid further troubles.

Police arrived at the scene, preventing the mob from further harming the church property, and arrested four of the fleeing Hindu extremists. The rest escaped.

Some time later, however, when the church service had started, eight people from the same mob returned to attack again. Police, already present, promptly arrested three of them.

Christians filed a First Information Report and charges were filed against the attackers.

Indore, the largest city of Madhya Pradesh, has long seen attacks on churches and Christians. In 2000, Hindu extremists vandalized three churches as a protest against the inauguration of an orphanage run by missionaries. Indore also witnessed attacks on five Franciscan nuns last year in October.

House Attack

In Friday’s attack in Kosmi, four or five Hindu extremists from the Bajrang Dal entered the home of Najak Ji, where the Jeevan Jyoti Church had organized a Lent meeting.

Shouting “Stop conversions,” the extremists grabbed the collar of Tom George from Kerala, who was speaking, and dragged him out. Sunil Lal from Jeevan Jyoti Ministry, who lives in nearby Barweli, tried to protect George, and the extremists grabbed him also. They dragged them outside, where 15 to 20 people were waiting and severely beat them.

Using bamboo poles, sticks, rods and other weapons, they beat George and Lal as well as Vijay Patle, Aman Sri Nag and a woman named Leela Patle. Lal and George sustained severe internal injuries, with Lal also suffering wounds on his head, ears, cheeks, shoulders, hands, stomach, knees and left leg.

The extremists also reportedly tried to violate the modesty of women present at the meeting.

Bajrang Dal members then took Lal and others to the Navegaon police station and accused them of converting Hindus, as if that were illegal in India, repeatedly saying, “You should not be coming into our area.”

Police took Lal and George to the Budi Government Hospital around 10:30 p.m., where they were treated and released the next morning.

The Bajrang Dal leaders who started the incident were reported as Reagan Tiwari, Chotu Lodhi, Ranjan and Sanju Kawde. A First Information Report was filed today, but no arrests have been made so far.

Justifying Sant Bhindrawale's acts he said he raised the banner of revolt because our identity itself including beliefs, way of life, language and culture was under attack. During Christmas week, local Christians had urged district authorities to provide police protection. Their pleas went unheeded.

On Christmas Eve, violence broke out against Christians in the Kandhamal district of the eastern Indian state of Orissa, which has become well known for poor governance and class tensions. Hindu fundamentalist groups led by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP, the World Hindu Council) have attacked Christians and their institutions at will in rural areas.

Indian Christians are feeling the heat of the rising Hindu nationalism in the South Asian giant.
"They came into my house waving sticks and chanting," Radha Bai, a Christian resident of Bothali village in the central state of Chhattisgarh, told The Christian Science Monitors in an interview published on Wednesday, February 6.

"They were looking for me, saying they would cut me into pieces," he added, referring to 50 Hindu extremists.

The attackers, members of a group calling itself Dharma Sena (Army of Religion), assaulted several men and set fire to 10 motorcycles and a car on January 16.

It was the latest attack by Hindu extremists against Christians in India's eastern states.

Hindu mobs destroyed 55 churches and 600 houses on Christmas in the state of Orissa.

"It is getting worse all the time," lamented Arun Pannalal, the general secretary of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum.

"Few of those cases go to court.

"But by then the extremists have done their job, which is to terrify people."

He said Christians often conceal their faith for fears of losing rights to government jobs and university posts.

Christians make up less than 3 percent of India's 1.1 billion population.

Dirty Politics

Many blame the rising attacks against Christians on political goals, citing a rise in attacks in Chhattisgarh, ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, a few months before the state went to polls.

"This is a movement that stirs the religious sentiments of Hindus and then makes political capital out of it," maintains Lalit Surjan, editor-in-chief of a group of newspapers in Chhattisgarh.

Hindu leaders argue, however, that Christians have only themselves to blame for tying to proselytize people in the predominantly-Hindu nation.

"They are converting Hindus by all means possible," charged Ramesh Modi, the president of Chhattisgarh's branch of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council).

"We cannot wear bangles [an expression meaning we cannot be feminine, gentle] all the time."

With the rise of Hindu nationalism, Hindu extremists have stepped up efforts to enact legislation to curb conversions from Hinduism.

At least seven states – including Chhattisgarh and Orissa – already have laws stipulating that Hindus must inform the authorities before changing religions.

Uttar Pradesh, January 28 (Compass Direct News) – The Rev. Yashwant Paul was arrested on January 21 in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh on charges of fraud in a case originally registered against him in 2004, reported the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI). Ramesh Chand accused Rev. Paul and his wife Monica Paul of offering him 20,000 rupees [US$508] and a job to convert to Christianity. Rev. Paul and his wife have vehemently denied the charges, according to the report. Rev. Paul was charged under the Indian Penal Code with cheating (Section 420) and criminal breach of trust (Section 407) and was locked up in the district jail of Ghaziabad; a magistrate rejected his initial bail plea. “This is an increasing and worrisome trend of pastors being accused by people who are goaded by Hinduvta [Hindu nationalist] extremists to register false cases against pastors of fraudulent conversions, to falsely implicate them,” a representative of EFI told Compass.

Karnataka – Hindu nationalist extremists belonging to the Bajrang Dal on January 17 attacked Baswamma Sangappa, 44, in Ullal, Mangalore Taluka, Karnataka for converting to Christianity, reported mangalorean.com. After attending a prayer meeting in a village home, Sangappa made a phone call from a public telephone booth at a local shop. “The petty shop owner, who overheard her conversation, asked her name and whether she was a Hindu,” Donald Menezes, chairman of the Mangalore unit of the Karnataka Mission Network (KMN) told Compass. “Baswamma told him that she had converted to Christianity 15 years ago. The shop owner then alerted a few people present there about her conversion, following which a group of extremists who were present beat her up.” Police arriving at the scene also hit her with their batons and took her in, Menezes said. Only after local Legislative Assembly Member U.T. Khader intervened was Sangappa released, he added. In a meeting with Superintendent of Police N. Satish Kumar, the KMN demanded that he take action against those responsible. Kumar ordered an inquiry into the incident, but at press time no arrests had been made.

Chhattisgarh – As if evangelizing or conversion were illegal in India, a group of Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) extremists on January 13 dragged a new convert returning from a Christian friend’s house to a police station and demanded that he be arrested for converting others in Kunkuri area in Chhattisgarh state’s Jashpur district. “A group of people from the Hindu Jagran Manch (Hindu Revival Front) brought Raju Soni to the police station and alleged that he was converting people in his neighborhood to Christianity,” a constable from Kunkuri police station, Jabarius Ekka, told Compass. “However, we refused to register any complaint against the convert.” Soni, who has been telling of God’s love since receiving Christ recently, was detained for a few hours, said Sudhir Teerthi, pastor of the independent Agape Gospel Mission church, where Soni worships. Soni, a jeweler, was baptized on January 1. Pastor Teerthi feared the extremists might now target him for asking his church members to tell others about Christ.

Madhya Pradesh – Police on January 11 arrested a pastor and five others on charges of luring a Hindu woman to convert to Christianity in Madhya Pradesh state’s Barwani district. Bhuri Bai filed a complaint against the pastor, identified only as Rawat, and the five believers for trying to convert her by offering monetary incentives, the Evangelical Fellowship of India said in a press statement. The six Christians deny the allegation, saying it is a ploy of Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) extremists, and they were released on bail. Besides the charge of allurement, they were arrested under Section 3 of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (anti-conversion law) and under Sections 147, 294, 323, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, for rioting, obscene acts, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation, respectively. Praveen Kumar Mathur, superintendent of police of Barwani, told Compass that tensions began when some food items of Bai’s family were burnt. She claimed that local Christians burned it, but the Christians maintain that Bai’s family set fire to their own food items to implicate them in a false case.

Chhattisgarh – Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) radicals disrupted a prayer meeting and beat five Christians on January 10 in Chhattisgarh state’s Raipur district. The attackers then filed a police complaint against three of the victims, who were arrested. The incident took place at around 9 a.m. in Gathapar area, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the state capital of Raipur. Those injured included three pastors, Dev Singh Manikpuri, Dhananjay Manikpuri and Dilip Manikpuri, all from the English Prayer Service Society (Horeb Prarthana Seva Samithi), and two other Christians, Gopal Manikpuri and Pradeep Verma. Dr. Sajan K. George, national president of the Global Council of Indian Christians said that Dev Singh Manikpuri fell unconscious after the beating and the other four also were severely injured. The attackers threatened to further harm the Christians if they conducted future meetings. The pastors, who had been invited by non-Christian villagers to conduct the meeting attended by more than 150 local people, were arrested by the Bhakhara police station and remained in jail at press time.

Chhattisgarh – Pastor Laxman Mankhi and five believers were arrested on Jan 9 after Hindu nationalists belonging to the Hindu extremist Dharma Sena filed false complaints of “forcible conversion” against them at Jagdalpur police station, Chhattisgarh. The Rev. Ajay Abraham told Compass, that Mankhi of the Beersheba Church of God in Bade Kaneri, Bastar district, was invited to pray for healing at the house of a Hindu villager, identified only as Amru, who had been regularly attending Beersheba services for a month. As Mankhi was praying over Amru, nearly 25 extremists led by a villager named Phoolchand Patel barged into the house shouting at them in abusive language, slapped Mankhi, punched and kicked the other Christians and made false allegations of forced conversion. The extremists had them arrested under Indian Penal Code Section 295 (A) for “hurting religious sentiments,” Abraham explained. Those arrested were Shyamlal Patel, Ramlal Patel, Malik Patel, Charan Patel and Laxminath Bharti.

Haryana – A mob of around 100 people from the Hindu extremist Bajrang Dal beat seven Christians and vandalized their house church on January 1 in Haryana state’s Jind district. According to the Christian Legal Association (CLA), the extremists stormed a New Year’s worship service attended by at least 20 Christians conducted by independent pastor Ashish John. Fearing for their lives, the Christians ran away as the attackers continued to damage church property. The pastor and six preachers whose names were not disclosed were injured. The Christians did not press charges, said a representative of the CLA, but the attackers tried to file a complaint accusing Pastor John of “forced” conversions. Police did not register the complaint.

Hindu Nationalists Plan to Revive Tensions in Orissa, India

Christians told to convert or die after Christmas attacks; extremists plot ‘Mission 2008.’

NEW DELHI, Amid reports of forced conversion of Christians to Hinduism following an unprecedented spate of violence over Christmas in Orissa state’s Kandhamal district, federal intelligence sources have warned churches of the likelihood of more attacks.

The intelligence department intercepted a letter by an extremist of a Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) group stating members will renew efforts to spark tensions in Kandhamal district and neighboring Chhattisgarh state, said Father Babu Joseph, spokesman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI).

According to a fact-finding team of the Orissa state chapter of the All India Christian Council, the violence killed at least four Christians and burned 730 houses and 95 churches in the days following last Christmas Eve. Hundreds of displaced Christians in Kandhamal are in various relief camps set up by the state government, where at least two people have died recently due to ailments.

Joseph told Compass that the letter, written by an extremist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Murari Lal, and sent to his colleague, Saudan Singh, reveals that the Hindutva group has planned an effort to create more tensions for Christians called “Mission 2008.”

Church leaders, added Joseph, have been asked to remain alert.

Lal, who was identified as an RSS worker in Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh state, named and praised several Hindutva outfits for their “good work” in the letter.

“Our Mission 2008 and its confidential meeting took place successfully,” the letter says, according to the Daily News and Analysis (DNA) newspaper. Our hope is to create Gujarat [state] type communal frenzy in Orissa.”

Gujarat is seen as the Hindu extremist Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “laboratory of Hindutva.” In 2002, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP colleagues allegedly allowed Hindu extremists to carry out anti-Muslim violence in which at least 2,000 people, mainly Muslims, were killed.

“We have begun a program to create communal tension by using the cow issue,” adds the letter, originally written in Hindi language. As cows are considered sacred by Hindus, extremists portray Christians and Muslims as “cow eaters,” besides accusing them of conversions and terrorism.

“In Jashpur and Sarguja districts [of Chhattisgarh state],” the letter says, “we have created a very good environment against Muslims and Christians. Adivasis [tribal people] have also started a front against foreign missionaries … This time even the Congress [Party] is supporting us.”

The letter also says there is a need to install statues of Hindu gods Hanuman and Shankar, which tribal people “recognize faster.”

“We need to install the statues as early as possible to make adivasis Hindus,” it says.

Tribal people or aboriginals in India are not Hindu. Most tribal people groups have their own faiths, mainly animistic.

RSS leader Ram Madhav, however, claimed in DNA that his organization had no role in the violence. “The RSS does not support any violence,” he said.

Christians fear the incidence of persecution will increase this year as legislative elections are expected in 10 states, including three states ruled by the BJP – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan (See Compass Direct News, “Christians Fear More Violence in Election Year,” January 15).

Convert or Die

Although the spate of violence began in Kandhamal on December 24 and subsided in about a week, special armed forces continued to be deployed in affected areas at press time.

The Times of India newspaper reported on Tuesday (January 22) that the 700 officers of Central Reserve Police Force deployed during the week of violence would remain in Kandhamal till March 15.

Despite the presence of federal armed forces and local police, however, reports surfaced of forced conversion of Christians to Hinduism.

A local Christian source from the Indian Evangelical Team ministry told Compass on condition of anonymity that such conversions have taken place in at least four villages after the initial violence.

“In Jargi village, 41 out of the 45 families from my church became Hindu due to pressure and threats,” said the local source. “Extremist elements forced the Christians to break their church with their own hands, and now a temple will be constructed at the site.”

In Mardudi village, pastor Dibakar Digal and his wife were forced to drink cow urine and apply vermillion on their foreheads, declaring themselves Hindu. They were threatened that if they did not convert, they would be killed.

While 18 Christian families were converted in a similar fashion in Kambarkia village, nine families were converted in the same way in Dandikia village.

UCA News (UCAN) also reported on Tuesday (January 22) that Orissa Christians had been given a “convert or die” ultimatum.

“There was no other way than to convert to Hinduism,” a Christian youth, Sumant Digal, from Gochhapada village, told UCAN. Extremists had threatened to kill him and torch his house if he did not become a Hindu.

“Several people told UCA News in mid-January that although the violence had subsided, Hindu fanatics continued to threaten Christians in interior villages,” stated the UCAN report. “The radicals want Christians to convert to Hinduism or leave the area, and they threaten to kill those who do not comply.”

The Catholic news agency quoted another Christian, Pusali Digal, from Jemapadar village, as saying, “Reconvert or die, or leave the place, was the option given to me and my family.”

NEW DELHI, January 18 (Compass Direct News) – More than 80 people were injured in an attack on a large Christian meeting on Wednesday (January 16) in Chhattisgarh state’s Durg district, followed yesterday by an assault on a missionary camp in Dhamtari district that hurt at least a dozen Christians.

The Hindu extremist attacks come within weeks of unprecedented anti-Christian violence in neighboring Orissa state. In Chhattisgarh’s Durg district violence, Christians said it was no coincidence that Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) extremists launched the attack as the political arm of the militants, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was holding a public meeting in the area.

The assault took place on Bhotli grounds in Gurur area of Durg district, where a local independent Christian worker, Mohan Khujjur Thomas, had organized a healing meeting for the local people, the Rev. Arpan Tarun of the Chhattisgarh Pastors’ Fellowship said.

“The attackers, who were from the extremist group Dharam Sena (Army for Religion), came in four trucks, beat Christians and others who were attending the healing meeting, and vandalized the makeshift structure,” Tarun told Compass.

Those injured include local people from other faiths who were taking interest in Christianity, Tarun said, adding that although some of the victims, including Thomas, were badly injured, no one was hospitalized.

The attackers also vandalized Thomas’ car.

The police inspector of the Gurur police station, who identified himself as D.S. Bihari, said only one of the attackers was identified and arrested, while the search for other culprits was underway.

Asked if the attackers were from a group espousing Hindutva, a nationalist ideology touting India as belonging to Hindus with other religions marginalized, Bihari pleaded ignorance, saying all he knew was that the one who was arrested is a devotee of Hindu god Hanuman.

“The investigation is on,” he added. “We should be able to arrest many more soon, and then we will know which group they belonged to.”

Hindus form more than 80 percent of the more than 1 billion people in India, with Christians amounting to about 2.4 percent of the population.

Afraid to Identify Attackers

Tarun of the Chhattisgarh Pastors’ Fellowship said police had asked victims to come to the police station to identify the attackers, but that they were too fearful to do so.

“Even if the police manage to arrest others,” he added, “they will soon be bailed out and roam free.”

Inspector Bihari said that about six kilometers (nearly four miles) from where the meeting was attacked, the BJP was holding a public meeting to launch a scheme to provide one kilogram of rice for three rupees (about 8 U.S. cents) to people through the public distribution system. Chief Minister Raman Singh organized the event, attended my numerous national leaders of the BJP.

Tarun said the presence of BJP leaders in the area emboldened the Hindutva extremists who launched the “pre-planned attack.”

“I suspect that the people who attacked the meeting had come to attend the BJP function,” he said.

The scheme was allegedly introduced as a part of the preparation for the state legislative election scheduled to take place later this year. Christians fear that upcoming elections in at least 10 states, including Chhattisgarh, will increase the incidence of anti-Christian attacks due to alleged attempts by the BJP to divide voters along the religious lines. A private TV news channel, IBN-7, caught the extremists vandalizing the tents in which the meeting was held. The presence of a TV camera did not deter them from engaging in the violence.

Tarun also said the chief of the Dharam Sena, identified only as Chandraval, made a statement on TV news channel E-TV threatening Christians with more attacks if such a meeting were held in the area again.

Local Christians met the district collector (administrative head) of Durg yesterday (January 17) to urge him to ensure protection of the community.

“It seems Christians have a second-class citizenship in their own country,” Tarun said, adding that Hindutva extremists in Chhattisgarh had no fear of law enforcement officials. The extremists attacked a similar meeting last year as well, he added.

Conversion Accusation

In yesterday’s assault in Dhamtari district, more than 200 members of Dharmasena, a group associated with the Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, attacked a missionary health camp.

The Dharmasena extremists accused the Christians of participating in a conversion ceremony.

In neighboring Orissa state, a series of violent attacks took place in Kandhamal district from December 24, 2007 to January 2. The attacks killed at least four Christians and burned 730 houses and 95 churches, according to the All India Christian Council.

“A spate of anti-Christian attacks had taken place in Orissa state’s Kandhamal district around Christmas, and now another large attack has been launched in Chhattisgarh state,” said a representative of the Christian Legal Association of India. “If this is the beginning of a trend, it is worrisome.”

According to the latest government statistics (2001 Census), there are only 401,035 Christians in Chhattisgarh out of the total population of more than 20.8 million.

The attacks are part of a larger campaign by Hindu radicals to turn India into a Hindu nation.

Christians Under Attack

t was perhaps one of the worst attacks on Christians ever in India's history. Last month, hundreds of Hindu radicals destroyed more than 700 Christian homes in India's eastern state of Orissa.

"The Hindu mob threatened us saying that India belongs to Hindus, Christians do not belong here," said Obed Diggal, a resident of the Kandhamal District.

Some 95 churches were demolished or burned to the ground.

"They warned us that if we rebuild the churches they would kill us; they would break our body into pieces just like they broke our church into pieces," another resident, Nabaghana Naik, said.

The man, whose group is suspected of taking part in the attacks, told CBN News that peace will come only when Christians in India stop proselytizing.

"This is my message to the Christians: Stop your conversions or you will learn a lesson from the Hindu society!" said Hindu Umasankar Acharya

Acharya didn't say what that lesson would be, but his Hindu extremist organization, Bajrang Dal often uses violence against Christians.

Bajrang Dal and other radical groups are trying to turn India into a Hindu nation- what many people would even call a fundamentalist state.

"The goal of the Hindu radicals is to destroy India's reputation as a secular and pluralistic democracy and replace it with an explicitly Hindu identity."

'Hindutva'

Ram Madhav is a spokesman for the RSS, a right-wing Hindu supremacist organization.

"Just as America belongs to Americans, Britain belongs to British, Germany belongs to Germans, he maybe a Muslim, he maybe a Christian, he maybe a Jew. Similarly, India belongs to Hindus, it is a Hindustan," Madhav said.

He claims that Hindus are the original creators of Indian culture and that they are descendants from an "Aryan" race. All others are "aliens" or "invaders". These and other extremist views form their ideology known as "Hindutva".

"Hindutva ideology is basically fascist-- that propagates one nation, one language, one people, one caste, one religion," human rights activist Father Cedric Prakash said.

While the number of people who subscribe to the Hindutva ideology is relatively small, their influence and popularity are growing in Indian society.

"Many of them are in key positions, they have, if I can use the word, infiltrated the administration, the judiciary," said Tehmina Arora of the Christian Legal Association.

And they're especially angry that Indian Christians and foreign missionaries are sharing the Gospel with lower-caste Hindus known as Untouchables or Dalits.

Acharya said, "Hinduism never asks the Christians or the Muslims to convert to Hinduism, but these Christians are always trying to decrease the population of Hindus by converting them to Christianity."

Dalits make up one-fifth of India's one billion plus population. They live on the margins of society, and are often considered by Hindus as less than human. But a growing number of them are turning to Christianity.

Dr. Sajan George is a Dalit convert and a member of the Global Council of Indian Christians.

"On arrival of Christianity as they started loving God they are being treated like human beings by Christians which is unacceptable to the higher caste system." George said.

The Biggest Killer? The Silent Majority

But their conversions aren't without a cost. Indian newspapers and human rights groups document the almost daily attacks against Dalits and other Christians.

"We are asking the Lord to give us more boldness, to give us the strength to bear His name and to stand strong in the face of terrible persecution," Dalit convert Sunderson Digal said.

Analysts warn that unless these radical Hindu groups are reined-in, violence against Christians will continue.

An investigation into the attacks in Orissa showed that the violence was premeditated and that state government and law enforcement officials had prior knowledge of a potential attack - but did nothing to prevent it.

Church leaders here are asking their fellow countrymen to end their silence and to speak out on behalf of those being persecuted for their faith.

George said, "Where is the collective conscious of this country? Are they dead now or are they just being silent supporters? The silent majority is the biggest killer."

Hindu extremists in India's Orissa state killed 50 Christians, burned 1000 homes and destroyed 100 church buildings and many are still missing persumed dead during the Christmas holy days , according to a report from the All India Christian Council. An estimated 6000 Christians took refuge in a church building after extremists tried to attack their village.

"Young and healthy Christians have left their villages to flee for their lives. Children, women, [the] old and sick, who could not flee for their lives, are in great danger," John Dayal, the council’s secretary general, told International Christian Concern, a human rights group based in Washington, D.C. "Remnants are starving for the last four days, and sick are suffering without medical attention."

Christians are being forced to convert to Hinduism in order to get food, medical attention and shelter, Dayal said.

Hundreds of Christians fled to government-run relief camps, where authorities were providing food, medicine and security, the Associated Press reported. New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has alleged that the communal violence in Orissa was not "an isolated breakdown of law and order" but a part of an "overall strategy" by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to subvert republican principles.

In an editorial in the latest issue of party mouthpiece People's Democracy, the CPI-M said safeguarding the republic was essential to put the country on the road to prosperity and progress.

CPI-M pointed out that last week's violence in Orissa's Kandhamal district that killed three people, allegedly unleashed by Hindu fundamentalists, came immediately after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s electoral victory in Gujarat.

"This anti-Christian campaign in Orissa is, thus, not an isolated breakdown of law and order. It is part of an overall strategy of the effort to transform modern India through the subversion of its republican principles."

The editorial said: "Such electoral tactics are not transitory but dovetail the larger strategy objective of the RSS - the objective of transforming the secular democratic character of the modern Indian Republic into its conception of a rabidly intolerant Hindu Rashtra."

The article said any attempt to subvert the fundamental pillars of India's constitution could create havoc for the unity and integrity of the country.

"India is a country of unparalleled diversities - religious, linguistic, cultural, ethnic etc. The only way a country of this size and diversity can be kept united is by strengthening the bonds of commonality that exist amongst this diversity.

"Any attempt to impose a uniformity on this diversity can only lead to the disintegration of this country. And, it is precisely this that the communal forces under the slogan of 'one country, one culture' are seeking to do," the editorial alleged.

The article recalled the anti-Christian campaign by the RSS and its affiliates launched in December 1998 in Gujarat, a state that is called Hindutva's laboratory and where the BJP has won election after election.

The party also noted that M.S. Golwalkar, one of the prominent leaders of the RSS, had once remarked that the three internal enemies of its pursuit of establishing its conception of a Hindu Rashtra were the Muslims, Christians and the communists.

The communists urged the Indian people to be alert and take steps to stop the efforts to communalise the nation.

"The majority of Indian people who cherish the republican foundations of modern India need to halt this communal juggernaut in its tracks. This is absolutely essential to first safeguard our republic and to put it on the road of overall prosperity and progress," the article said.

BHUBANESWAR: The communal violence that recently hit backward Kandhamal district cannot be seen in isolation when the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its affiliates have been saying that Orissa will be their next Hindutva laboratory after Gujarat, said Sitaram Yechury, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader here on Friday. “It has implications for the whole country.”

After the victory of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat, RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad had started the process of consolidating the Hindu vote bank, Mr. Yechury told a press conference.

The very fact that the communal violence in Kandhamal started a day after the announcement of the Gujarat election results made it clear that it was premeditated, he said.

Mr. Yechury, who talked to some victims of the violence from Kandhamal here and saw photographs and other visuals depicting the damage, observed that the pattern was exactly like what happened in Dangs district of Gujarat 10 years ago.

He planned to visit Brahamanigaon, one of the worst affected villages in Kandhamal on Friday. However, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and top officials requested him not to go.

The CPI(M) leader came down heavily on the Naveen Patnaik Government for its ‘failure’ to deal with the situation in Kandhamal.

“The fact that we are being requested not to visit the affected areas more than 10 days after violence hit the district makes it amply clear that the situation was yet to turn normal,” he said.

Mr. Yechury said the administration had not been able to work effectively as the Bharatiya Janata Party was a partner in the two-party coalition government in the State, Mr. Yechury said. “This is not a good sign.”

As for the tribals’ opposition to grant of scheduled tribe status to the Dalit Christians in Kandhamal, Mr. Yechury said the latter should not be granted ST status just because they spoke the Kui tribal language. He, however, said the government should take measures to bring the Dalit Christians under the purview of reservation to put an end to the problem.

He also demanded land reforms in the region to ensure uplift of the tribals who were economically backward than the Dalits in Kandhamal.

Sporadic violence

PTI reports from Phulbani:

Night curfew was imposed at five more places in Kandhamal district following sporadic violence in the last few days.

They were Kelapada, Nuapadar, Pabingia, Bhrungijodi and Dindragaon villages.

Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy told reporters in Bhubaneswar on Friday that night curfew also continued in the sensitive Brahmanigaon, Phulbani, Baliguda, Daringbadi and Phiringia towns, he said. The government was hopeful of restoration of complete normality in Kandhamal in the next four-five days.

The Centre has accepted the State’s request for extending deployment of paramilitary forces like the CRPF in the riot-torn district up to January 7, he said.

The latest assessment showed that 58 villages were affected and around 657 houses damaged, official sources said, adding the exercise of assessing the extent of damage was expected to be completed on Saturday.

The authorities started disbursing compensation to the affected people, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (southern division) Satyabrata Sahu said.

NEW DELHI, January 2 Orissa state’s Kandhamal district remains tense 10 days after a series of anti-Christian attacks began, and thousands of Christians whose houses have been burned down are facing hunger and fear.

“Local Christians who had fled to the nearby mountains fearing for their lives have begun to return, due to a high presence of police and security personnel,” said pastor Victor John, who came to Udaigiri village in the Mallikapur area of Kandhamal as a guest speaker in a Baptist church on December 24, the day the attacks led by the Hindu extremist Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP) began.

John told Compass that the atmosphere was still tense despite the deployment of troops.

“I am planning to leave for my home in Chhattisgarh state tomorrow morning, but it is very risky,” he said with evident nervousness in his voice. “I need prayers.”

A police official told Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) today that although there was no report of fresh violence since Tuesday morning, “the situation continues to remain critical.”

IANS also reported that at least three houses were burned down in three separate attacks on Monday (December 31) in the villages of Rabingia, Barpada and Daringbadi.

According to a memorandum submitted to the National Human Rights Commission on Monday, Christian leaders said that around nine people had been killed, close to 90 churches burned, about 600 houses torched or vandalized, and 5,000 people affected.

The memorandum was signed by Delhi Catholic Archbishop the Most Rt. Rev. Vincent Concessao, AICC President the Rev. Dr. Joseph D’Souza, spokesperson of Delhi Catholic Archdiocese the Rev. Dr. Dominic Emmanuel, and Joint Secretary of Christian Legal Association Lansinglu Rongmei, among others.

Dr. John Dayal, general secretary of the All India Christian Council (AICC), told Compass that there was no official account of how many people had died in police gunfire, mob violence or other injuries sustained during the anti-Christian violence that began on Christmas Eve.

“Many people, including young women, are still reported missing,” said Dayal, who was visiting Kandhamal district on a fact-finding mission. “We have no account, and neither do we know if the police have tried to search for them. Christians have been arrested, we learn, but there is no official word on it. Troublemakers seem to have a free hand in the entire district despite night curfew.”

Dayal complained that no church group had been allowed to visit the affected areas, so the AICC has not been able to provide even psychological support to traumatized victims.

Police asked Dayal’s team to leave Kandhamal on Sunday (December 30), but after going to the state capital of Bhubaneswar, he returned later to affected villages.

“We understand from our priests and others who are able to communicate with us that there has been bias in distribution of relief, and that many families are still not getting any assistance,” he added.

Government officials are not giving relief to women, Dayal pointed out, explaining that the women were asked to comeback with their husbands or sons. “We fear it may be a ruse to arrest the men folk,” he said.

Violent Response to Conversions

Tensions in Kandhamal began on December 24 as the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Brahmani village was pitching a tent for Christmas celebrations. A mob led by the VHP launched a fierce attack on Christians and their shops to protest the planned celebrations.

Local Christians say VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, a prominent opponent of Christians for more than a decade, was behind the attack.

“It was Saraswati who instigated the mob to attack us,” said a Christian from Brahmani on condition of anonymity. “Later, Christians learned that Saraswati was coming to launch more attacks. Sections of Christians tried to stop him on the way, which resulted in a clash between the two groups, following which the VHP claimed that their leader was hurt and announced that now Christians would be attacked as revenge.”

Saraswati told media on December 25 that the reason for the violence was conversions by area Christians.

It is estimated that Christians make up 16 percent of the total population of Kandhamal district.

Pleas for Protection

Christians from various denominations across the country have held several rallies to show solidarity with the victims, and they have met with political leaders, including the prime minister, imploring them to ensure the safety of believers in Orissa.

Written requests have been submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Pratibha Patil, Federal Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Orissa State Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Gov. Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare.

A group of Christian authors demanded a ban on the VHP for its reported role in the ongoing communal violence in Orissa.

The Writers’ Forum, which is meeting for its second annual meeting in Panjim in Goa state, called for the ban in a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil on Monday (December 31).

The forum accused the federal and Orissa state governments of inaction and apathy due to their inability to stop “premeditated” violence, saying the ongoing abuse had done “international damage to India’s reputation.”

Police, however, said the peculiar terrain of the area hindered their movements and efforts to reach the hot spots in time.

“Kandhamal, which has an area of 8,021 square kilometers, has only 15 police stations with a sanctioned strength of 647 personnel, who cater to a population of 648,201,” authorities said in the Hindustan Times today.

A gang of 10-15 hoodlums knocked on the door of the convent at 2 in the morning, and asked the nuns (who provide medical services to members of the tribes living in the region) to come with them to see a patient, according to Father Lucas Izidore, the secretary of the Indore diocese where the events took place. Izidore said that the nuns, suspicious of the request, refused to open the door and instead bolted themselves into the convent chapel and started praying.

The hoodlums then broke open the iron doors of the convent, and looted the convent. Later, they shouted at the nuns to open the chapel doors, promising that they would not harm them. "On coming out, all the four nuns in the convent were forcibly taken to the nearby fields and gang-raped," said Father Izidore. He requested that the names of the nuns, and the congregation to which they belonged, be withheld.

BAMUNIGAM, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- At least nine Christians have been killed in India's religiously volatile eastern state of Orissa where Hindu extremists continued attacking Christian institutions and individual believers for a fifth day Friday, December 28, church sources said.

"Seven Christians were killed [Wednesday] December 27 alone in the eastern Indian state," including five who died when "Hindu radicals attacked houses in Barakhama [village] in [Orissa's] Kandhamal district" and a seminary in the village, said the Union of Catholic Asian News (UCA News), an official news agency of Catholic churches.

Two more Christians were reportedly killed when police opened fire at a protesting crowd, but there was no immediate independent verification. With two earlier deaths, at least nine Christians have lost their lives in the violence that started on Monday, December 24, according to church estimates.

"Where is the rule of law?" key Christian leaders asked in an appeal to authorities obtained by BosNewsLife. The regional Archbishop Raphael Cheenath, John Dayal, a member of the National Integration Council advising India's government and Reverend P R Paricha of advocacy group All India Christian Council (AICC), who signed the appeal, suggested that beside the killings some "50 churches and institutions" were known to have been "destroyed or desecrated."

DEEP APPREHENSION

"There is deep apprehension that the State government and the police, despite their lip-service to restore peace and remove the fears of the people, have not shown the alacrity and diligence required in the face of the spreading hate campaign against Christians, coercive and threatening speeches and the violence," Friday's appeal of Christian leaders said.

"It is strange that both the Central and State governments are pleading that police forces cannot enter the deep forest areas because hoodlums have cut trees to block roads. Surely the police have the manpower and machinery to remove such roadblocks and restore the rule of law," they said, adding that India's Central Bureau of Investigation should make arrests and "restore peace" while officials should also give "compensation to all victims."

Regional Catholic Archbishop Raphael Cheenath said earlier in comments published by BosNewsLife this week that the bloodshed began early Monday, December 24, in the small town of Bamunigam, about 336 kilometers (210 miles) southwest of the state capital of Bhubaneswar. "Hindu fundamentalists forcefully removed the Christmas decorations which a local business association had put up [across the town] as a preparation for Christmas." After "some quarrels" a group of people attacked the Christians "with sticks, knives and other lethal weapons," he said, adding that the violence soon spread.

On Friday, December 28, Hindu extremists reportedly continued to attack Christians with swords, wooden sticks and iron bars. Eyewitnesses said that in several places attackers set fire to vehicles, homes and churches, as well as documents and furniture gathered from Christian institutions. Catholic church officials said priests, nuns and laypeople including children and women fled their villages into jungle areas to escape the violence. The whereabouts and fate of some priests remained unknown Friday, December 28. Christian missionaries were also targeted, but there were no reports of injuries, BosNewsLife established.

ESCALATING VIOLENCE

Amid the escalating violence, Christians across the country have held demonstrations, including in front of Orissa Nivas, the Orissa state government's guest house in New Delhi,
where UCA News estimated that some 400 Christians, Catholics among them, gathered with lighted candles. Christian leaders also met India's Federal Home Minister Shivraj Patil
this week to seek his intervention. Patil reportedly promised to help end the violence.

Elsewhere in Bhopal, capital of the central state of Madhya Pradesh, Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal on December 27 joined about 250 priests and nuns in praying for the return of peace and normalcy in Orissa, UCA News said. The archbishop expressed "deep sorrow" over the victimization of Christians there.

Father Anand Muttungal, spokesperson or the Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh said in published remarks that the violence in Orissa should be seen "as a political game" of the Hindu-led Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] or Indian People's Party. Other groups behind the violence include the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or 'World Hindu Council' which opposes the spread of Christianity and what it calls "forced conversions."

Analysts say Orissa is a stronghold of Hindu nationalism. An anti-conversion law has been in place since 1968 in an attempt to block missionary activities by Christians. In 1967 the state adopted the Freedom of Religion Act, which started the process that has led to what human rights groups and churches describe as "repressive" anti-conversion laws. Nearly 700 Christians fearing attacks by Hindus took shelter in government-run relief camps Saturday after sectarian violence in eastern India left at least four people dead last week.

Authorities were providing food, medicine and security to Christians who moved into the four relief camps on Friday in the rural district of Kandhamal in eastern Orissa state, said Pradeep Kapoor, the inspector-general of police.

Meanwhile, two police officers were suspended for failing to prevent violence on Christmas Eve, when long-standing tensions between the Hindu majority and the small Christian community erupted over conversions to Christianity, Kapoor told The Associated Press.

Nearly 800 police and paramilitary forces were trying to restore calm, he said.

No fresh incidents of violence were reported Saturday for a second day in Kandhamal, nearly 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state, Kapoor said.

Rising anti-missionary sentiment has caused several Indian state governments to pass anti-conversion laws which India's Christians - who represent 2.5 per cent of the country's 1.1 billion population - are fighting in court.

Celebrations at churches across the country this Christmas Day will be marked by lit trees and candles, hymns and carols, cakes and cookies. And, in some cases, extra security.

As Christian migrants flock in large numbers from states such as Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and Tamil Nadu to urban centres, many are finding it hard to leave behind fears of religious discrimination. At least 200 cases of attacks against Christians for their faith have been reported across the country this year, as per the newly formed Christian Legal Association (CLA).

At Christmas Eve services in Orissa, a mob allegedly led by a leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shot at two Christian children to protest celebrations by a church in the Kandhamal district. “The RSS leader instigated local residents and led a mob of more than 100 people carrying sticks and guns to attack the Christians indiscriminately,” parish priest Rabi Sudhasundar of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, told the Indo-Asian News Service.

While such incidents are mainly in smaller towns and villages, the lawyers group notes an increase in cities.

In New Delhi, home to an estimated 1.3 million Christians, the minority community has been shaken by at least two incidents in recent months.

On the morning of 5 December, at least 100 men entered the Church of Divine Mercy in Pitampura, north Delhi. The men destroyed a generator and machinery, and were overheard shouting, “Church, no church here.” The police are yet to trace the offenders, said a church member who did not want his name mentioned. Police confirmed the incident and said they have dispatched officers on a regular basis to ensure worshippers’ peace.

“There is a general fear among Christians,” says Ivan Moses, a pastor at the Delhi Bible Fellowship. “Although they are celebrating Christmas, it’s not easy.”

On the evening of 28 October, Moses said, four men broke into the Kalyanpuri community hall in east Delhi. A spiritual talk was in progress and about 200 people, including women and children, belonging to several independent church groups, had gathered, when the men started breaking chairs and pelting stones as they yelled: “Jai Shri Ram.”

Moses, who was one of the speakers that evening, says he was slapped four times. A few of the miscreants were arrested after the police arrived. Church members say they were accused of handing out flyers to convert Hindus, but deny the allegations.

They decided not to press formal charges, however, as “we did not want the local pastors to be in trouble,” said Moses. Local police confirmed the incident.

12/24/07 India .- Shortly after campaigning for Hindu fanatic party in the run up to the state legislature election in Gujarat state, Hindu extremists attacked tribal Christians, including a nun, to punish them for supporting the Congress Party.

The attack took place at around 8 p.m. on December 19 in Baidiya village in Vadodara district’s Kawant area while staffs and students of the Don Bosco School and Adivasi Shaishanik Arogya Kendra (Tribal Education and Health Centre) were staging a play on environmental issues for the villagers.

“This is not just an attack on a minority religion, but it is a part of a wider conspiracy to deny human rights and fundamental rights (religious and voting rights) to the Adivasis (tribal or aboriginal people), create division among them, and keep alive the divisive agenda in order to fish in the troubled waters,” Dr. John Dayal, president of the All India Catholic Union, told ICC.

Joseph Monty Rodrigues, the manager of the Don Bosco School described the attack, saying, “As the children were staging the play, one Rathwa Harsingbhai Mansingbhai rushed in and removed the curtain forcefully and hit one of the students of Class IX, Suresh Narubhai Rathwa, on the head.”

Later, another person, identified as Rathwa Pravinbhai, joined Mansingbhai to oppose the play.

Rodrigues gave a first person account in an email message, a copy of which is with ICC.

“They (the miscreants) said the Fathers and Sisters of Don Bosco were supporters of the Congress Party and therefore they must not step into this village. They insulted us and our religion and abused us for being Christians,” said Rodrigues.

At least 500 villagers were watching the play, which was organized by the Christians on an invitation by the village court.

The two miscreants also threatened to burn the Christians alive.

“Apprehending more tensions, we stopped the play at once and packed up our things,” added Rodrigues.

While the Christians were returning, some more people came to attack them.

“We left for Kawant via the Keladra-Pipalda road around 9:30 p.m. While passing from the Sim Segva stream near Keladra, a blue tempo came towards us to knock the motorbike being ridden by our staffs Madubhai Rathwa and Bharsingbhai Rathwa. But, somehow, they managed to escape. The tempo then tried to hit the jeep in which I was sitting.”

There were around 15 people carrying sticks and rods in the tempo. They stopped the vehicles and hit Madubhai Rathwa. Then they dragged the school students out of the other jeep and beat Fr. Damien Sladen, who was accompanying the children. Fr. Sladen was beaten till he fell unconscious.

The tempo was being driven by a person identified as Nangarsing Rathwa.

The miscreants also took away a laptop that was kept in the jeep besides vandalizing the vehicle.

Then the attackers came to the jeep in which Fr. Rodrigues, nun Sr. Manjula, and a few girl students were sitting.

The miscreants held Sr. Manjula’s neck and hand and tried to pull her out. Then they grabbed her scarf and shawl, and pulled her sari (an Indian wrap-around dress for women). They tore her blouse and banged her against the jeep twice and threw her down. They also grabbed her purse and mobile phone, and broke her silver chain.

The attackers also pulled out four girls from the jeep, but Sr. Manjula managed to rescue them and herself, and ran away. In the meantime, even Fr. Rodrigues could escape driving the jeep away.

“I went to the Kawant police station at 11:30 pm and informed the police, who came along with me to the place of the incident, where we found Fr. Damien injured and four girls, and also Sr. Manjula. All of them were crying,” aid Fr. Rodrigues.

The victims were admitted to a hospital.

The police did register a complaint against the attackers, but with initial reluctance.

In the meanwhile, a Hindu extremist sage, Jagat Guru Acharya Narendra Maharaj, led the alleged “reconversion” of around 2,000 tribal (aboriginal) Christians in a function on December 17 in Gujarat state’s Tapi district.

According to The Indian Express Newspaper, the function took place at the Shivaji Grounds area.

The “converts” took an oath and admitted affidavits saying they would not convert to Christianity ever again in the future, said the newspaper.

“Many of the tribal men also cut off their hair and took oaths, while all of them gave thumb impressions on the affidavits saying they have willingly returned to the folds of the Hindu religion,” added the daily.

Christian leaders say such reconversion claims are false, as extremist groups gather poor and illiterate tribal people, who are not Christians in the first place, and portray the rally as a reconversion function.

According to media reports, groups associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parent organization of numerous Hindu extremist groups and the chief persecutor of Christians in India, sought votes for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister, Narendra Modi, to strengthen “Hindu forces” in the state. The BJP is a Hindu nationalist party and political wing of the RSS. (See ICC report dated December 18, “Indian Party Promises to Persecute Christians in order to Gain Votes.)

The assembly polls to the 182-member assembly in Gujarat concluded on December 16. The counting of the votes will begin on December 23.

“It looks as if they (RSS) want to create terror and communal tension before the vote counting and during the Christmas celebrations. The rumors are that the BJP is preparing to create trouble for Christians during the Christmas and this is just the beginning,” added Dayal.

Attack on churches
Attempt to terrorise a whole community

WHILE the people the world over were celebrating Christmas on December 25, the Christians in Orissa’s Kandhamal district were at the receiving end with alleged activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad destroying church after church. In the mindless violence unleashed on the community, one person was killed and several were injured. The attack was ostensibly to retaliate against the alleged manhandling of a VHP leader. That the VHP chose to convert some Christians to Hinduism on that day bears out that the whole purpose was to foment trouble. Orissa is one state where the so-called Freedom of Religion law is in force which makes it obligatory for the organisers of such conversion ceremonies to follow certain procedures. That the VHP has been paying scant regard for such a law on the specious plea that what it organises is not conversion but “home-coming”.

Despite all the potential for mischief, the district authorities failed to take any preemptive action. What’s more, they could not even protect the house of a minister from the communally surcharged lot. It is not the first time that Orissa has witnessed religious tension. The burning of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two minor sons was preceded by several incidents of attack on the minorities in the name of protest against cow slaughter and religious conversion. It is the kid-glove treatment those behind such violent campaigns received that emboldened them to burn the missionary who was tending to the leprosy patients in one of the most backward areas of Orissa. There are feudal and pseudo-political forces that do not want the poor to get educated and know their legal and democratic rights for fear it would upset the caste-based social system.

The Orissa government is duty-bound to take stringent action against all those who desecrated the churches. It should also go after those who “attacked” the VHP leader and bring them to book. No excuse is good enough to terrorise a whole community. In fact, any leniency shown will be construed as a failure of the state to protect not just the life and property of the people but also their right to preach and practise their religious beliefs. What the Orissa government does in Kandhamal district will show how committed it is to uphold the rule of law and the religious rights of the people.

Surpassing many predictions, Narendra Modi has done very well in the Gujarat assembly elections, bringing his victory tally to the one close to post carnage elections of 2002. While 2002 elections were preceded by an unprecedented polarization of the society, in the current one it appeared as if there are many a factors which will go against Modi, the internal dissidents, the incumbency factor, the efforts of secular groups and slightly better efforts by Congress. This gave the impression that the results would be touch and go, but they turned out to be similar to the previous one giving him a massive mandate.

This makes many a things clear. One, that polarization has seeped in very deep in Gujarat's society. After every bout of communal violence, the major player of the violence, in this case the RSS affiliate, the BJP, emerges stronger. In this election also, as was the case in the last elections, the BJP's performance has been best where the carnage was maximum. In other parts of the country the polarization is reaching towards the critical line from where the rupture in the fabric of society becomes irreversible. It seems that this has already happened in Gujarat. A state that began as a Hindu Rashtra laboratory seems to be turning into a Hindu Rashtra factory. One of the major successes of the RSS-BJP combine has been that it has been able to propagate successfully that Hindu Rashra is for the benefit of all Hindus, that there is a struggle between Hindu and Muslim interests and, perhaps most importantly, that the RSS is on the side of the Hindus, while others are against them. The real fact is that by using the religion card, the RSS is merely playing with the identity of Hindus and enhancing an agenda which goes against the social transformation of caste and gender, which in turn is against the interests of the majority of Hindus.

Furthermore, the RSS has succeeded in instilling a fear of Muslims in the majority community. The formula used is that all terrorists are Muslims, baying for the blood of Hindus and that the RSS combine is their only saviour. The propaganda is that while so many terror attacks are taking place all over the country, the Hindus in Gujarat are safe due to the Modi/BJP/RSS rule. All this is projected as 'nationalism'. The second illusion created relates to progress in Gujarat. The fact is that it has always been among India's more developed states. Now it is being presented that all this is due to Modi's rule.

Sometimes what matters is not the truth but as to what is propagated and made a part of social psyche. One cannot but draw many analogies from Hitler who went on to create a fascist state. In that case also, the charisma of one person overshadowed the whole party. The only difference between the German and Gujarat analogy is that in Germany the entire nation came under Hitler's spell while in India the trishuls are marching at a different pace in each state.

The journey of Hindutva fascism in Gujarat began with the anti-Dalit riots of 1980-81, followed by the anti-OBC (other backward classes) riots of 1986. The NRI Gujaratis, the money order senders, have played a large role in consolidating and strengthening the fascism in their land. Conscious social engineering was used to co-opt adivasis and dalits into the Hindutva fold from late 1980s. For this, the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram campaigned against Christian missionaries – which were not many in number – and attacked the miniscule Christian community. For co-opting other deprived sections, including dalits, intense religiosity was promoted. A section of the urban population saw the benefits of the type of intimidation created by the politics of the RSS and its affiliates. While Muslims and Christians were directly hit the other major goal was to subdue the dalits and adivasis to ensure that the status quo is maintained.

While comparing BJP/RSS politics with fascism in the 1990s one is hard pressed to explain the absence of a charismatic leader at the national level at that time. Classically speaking, a fascist movement has to have a charismatic leader at the helm. While Advani was spearheading the Hindutva agenda and Vajpayee was wearing the liberal mask very cleverly, neither had the requisite charisma to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Modi stepped in and has filled this gap and that too very effectively. Not only he is getting away with murder, he is able to project it as a sign of bravery and courage.

However, history does not repeat itself in the same manner. In Germany, fascism rode all over Germany with uniform speed, with speed which was blinding, and went on to target Jews. The RSS, the patriarch of all rightwing Hindu organizations, began in 1925 but it is only since the 1980s that is has been able to actualize its political agenda in a serious way. While Modi's victory will pave the way for total abolition of liberal space in Gujarat, the BJP has already been overshadowed by one supreme leader. The plight of the minorities in the state and other weaker sections of society is going to deteriorate while the increasingly affluent middle class will rejoice.

Modi's victory is a warning signal of transition of sub critical fascism, transcending the critical line to strangulate democratic values in an ideological form all over the country. The disarray in the BJP will give way to strong optimism, to strive for power at center. All this may take place sooner than later if the secular movements do not wake up and broaden their reach. Even today those standing for secular values are much more in number and strength than those who have came under the spell of divisive forces, communal forces. The point is can they come together to ensure that India goes in the direction being asserted by Modi/BJP/RSS type politics.

India's Hindu nationalist BJP is due to announce that Narendra Modi will continue as chief minister of Gujarat state after winning a key state poll.

Mr Modi's BJP won 117 of 182 seats in the state assembly. Its main rival, the Congress party, won 59 seats.

The chief minister is set to begin a third term after Sunday's win.

Correspondents say the BJP's victory in Gujarat will boost the party as it challenges Congress ahead of a general election due in the next 18 months.

State party leaders are due to meet in Gujarat to elect Mr Modi as the leader of the legislative party, paving the way for him to continue as the chief minister.

Mr Modi is expected to be sworn in on Thursday.

It is the fourth consecutive BJP election victory in Gujarat.

The Congress party acknowledged its defeat in the state, but reminded voters of religious riots in 2002.

More than 4,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in the ensuing violence.

His opponents say he indirectly egged on Hindu mobs who are believed to have led most of the attacks.

His supporters say he could have done little under the circumstances to prevent the violence.

But since then, Mr Modi has been seen as the face of militant Hinduism.

He may polarise public opinion in India but he has also been credited for bringing prosperity and development to Gujarat.

A lover of expensive clothes, he is considered to be business friendly.

The state's economy has been growing at more than 10% a year, significantly above the national average, and many Gujaratis are feeling wealthier.

But while those who have benefited during his time as chief minister will applaud his re-election, for the victims of the 2002 riots, a victory for Mr Modi is likely to be just one more symbol of injustice.

When Mr Modi was re-elected state chief minister in December 2002 his biggest gains were in areas of intercommunal violence.

During those elections he campaigned openly on a platform of hardline Hinduism.

Analysts say the reason why the chief minister remains relatively unscathed is the strong support he enjoys among senior leaders in the right-wing Nazi Hindu organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The RSS, founded in the 1920s with a clear objective to make India a Hindu nation, functions as an ideological fountainhead to a whole host of hardline Hindu groups - including the BJP with which it has close ties.

The RSS has a particularly strong base in Gujarat and Mr Modi's ties to it were seen as a strength the organisation could tap when he joined the state unit of the BJP in the 1980s.

Mr Modi reportedly married a woman working as a teacher in a poor Muslim area about 100km (60 miles) from Gujarat's commercial capital, Ahmedabad.

But his official biography makes no mention of it.

Critics say the omission is in keeping with the value that RSS traditionalists place on a life of bachelorhood - allowing in their view true dedication to the organisation.

Mr Modi is one of a set of savvy BJP leaders who are as comfortable with IT as with the hardline politics of the Hindu right.

This combination is believed to be central to their political appeal.

Mr Modi has a formidable reputation as a party organiser.

This skill, along with an ability for secrecy, comes from long years of training as an RSS "pracharak" or propagandist, analysts say.

Mr Modi got his big break in the public arena when his predecessor in the state, Keshubhai Patel, was forced to step down in the fall-out from the earthquake in January 2001 that killed nearly 20,000 people.

Critics say that even if his BJP support withers, as long as Mr Modi holds the backing of the RSS he will be hard to prise from office.

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- Hindu Terrorists have kidnapped a devoted Indian Christian in a religiously volatile region of the Indian state of Karnataka, the latest incident in an ongoing crackdown on Christians in several parts of the country, a human rights official with close knowledge about the situation told BosNewsLife Saturday, December 22.

Sajan K. George, president of the advocacy group Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) said 45-year-old Gajanana Poojari was abducted "by four masked men" from his home in the early hours of Friday, December 21, in the Shiroor area, about 73 kilometers (45 miles) outside the town of Udupi.

The men "blindfolded" him, "trussed him up" and "carried him off to a red car parked near by," George said. "Poojari raised an alarm by shouting, and made a futile attempt to escape, but he was muffled by his abductors and driven away under cover of darkness," the GCIC official said.

Neighbors heard Gajanana Poojari's cries and informed his local pastor, Rev. K.A Abraham of the Life&Light Ministries group, but they do not know his whereabouts, George claimed. Police officials are reportedly investigating the incident.

RADICAL GROUPS

George said the abductors are suspected to be members of one of several radical Hindu groups fighting the spread of Christianity in this predominantly Hindu nation. "Gajanan Poojari put his faith in Christ several years ago, but his family and some locals have been against this. He had been brutally beaten" by a suspected Hindu militant about four years ago "for his faith in Jesus Christ," he added.

The kidnapping came after a crowd of Hindu extremists allegedly threatened Poojari and Pastor Abraham last week. "Gajananna Poojari made an open statement before the police official" who was asked to intervene,” and the hostile crowd saying that even if he is killed or deserted by any one, he would continue to follow Christ," George said.

Poojari is married with three children. The situation of his family was not immediately clear Saturday, December 22. The kidnapping is no isolated incident, GCIC and other rights groups say.

The GCIC has said it recorded at least 500 attacks against Christians, many of them missionaries, carried out by Hindu militants backed by political parties and groups.

12/18/07 India (International Christian Concern) - Hindu extremist groups openly campaigned for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run up to the elections to the state legislature in the western state of Gujarat, indicating that they work in tandem to persecute religious minorities, including Christians.

According to media reports, groups associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parent organization of numerous Hindu extremist groups and the chief persecutor of Christians in India, sought votes for the BJP chief minister, Narendra Modi, to strengthen "Hindu forces" in the state. Voting for the 182-member assembly in Gujarat ended on December 16.

For instance, an elusive but overtly militant group, "Hindu Brotherhood - Kashmiri Hindu Liberation Army" (HB-KHLA), appealed for votes saying Modi's victory could be a means to "Hinduize politics and militarize Hindus."

"Don't let your children ask you, 'When you had a chance, why did you not establish Hindutva....because of you, we are at the mercy of radicals (read Muslims and Christians),'" said an email message sent en masse through a Google group by the HB-KHLA. ICC has a copy of the email.

The term "Hindutva," a Hindu nationalistic ideology, was coined by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (popularly known as Veer Savarkar) in 1923 through a pamphlet "Hindutva: Who is a Hindu."
According to Hindutva, India belongs to the Hindu majority community, and religious minorities, mainly Christians and Muslims, are outsiders.

"We are still slaves of Christian missionaries and Islamic radicals and vote for hungry pseudo-secular political leaders (of the opposition Congress party). Your vote (to the BJP) will kill all of them."

As a solution to the "Muslim and Christian problems (read terrorism and conversions)," the HB-KHLA suggests: "We Hindus should militarise and industrialize ourselves… In the army, navy and air force, Hindus should have the majority. In fact, people with double faiths should not be allowed to enter the Indian military. This is the only way to keep ourselves safe."

According to its charter, India needs to establish "a single party militarized government based on the divine laws of Hindu Dharma (religion), and Hindutva ideology."

The HB-KHLA website, http://www.hindurashtra.org , carries no contact details but an email identity.
Similarly, Ashok Singhal, the chief of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP) told the media that his organization did not want the "model state" to fall into the hands of a party run by a "Christian foreigner" (referring to Congress party president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, a Roman Catholic by birth).

On November 30, The Telegraph newspaper reported Singhal as saying that it was a myth that Hindu outfits would oppose the BJP in Gujarat and allow power to slip into the hands of a "foreigner."

"The BJP is the symbol of Hindu forces," he said.

The assurance by the VHP came against the backdrop of divisions within the BJP and its tensions with groups linked to the RSS, including the VHP.

The newspaper said the top BJP leadership had held several meetings with RSS leaders to turn them around, "aware that winning an election without the Sangh's cadres might not be easy."

In response, the VHP held election campaigns for the BJP in Dangs district. "We are going to help the BJP 110 per cent. We need them. The BJP helps us in organizing tribals," admitted Surji Gavit, a VHP worker, while talking to the NDTV news channel on December 5.

The Gujarat district of Dangs is of particular interest to the VHP because it is dominated by tribal people where close to 30 percent of the population is estimated to be Christian. However, at the state-level, Christians comprise less than one percent of the total population, which is more than 50 million.

Dangs is infamous for a spate of anti-Christian violence from December 25, 1998 to January 3, 1999. The attacks followed the distribution of pamphlets against Christians and a massive rally where provocative speeches were made against Christian tribal peoples by the Hindu Jagran Manch (Forum for Revival of Hindus, or HJM), another RSS-related group.

The BJP administration was warned by Christians of tensions due to the rally, but the authorities allegedly refused to take any preventive measures. Nor did authorities do anything to protect Christians or punish the guilty.

According to analysts, the RSS cadre helps the BJP, its political wing, to win elections by raising issues that divide communities along religious lines. Having come to power, the BJP in turn helps the RSS cadre to indulge in violence with impunity.

Gujarat is seen as the BJP's "laboratory of Hindutva" by rights activists.

Weekly magazine Tehelka recently released the results of a sting operation indicating the involvement of Modi and his BJP colleagues in the anti-Muslim carnage in February and March 2002.

The violence, in which at least 2,000 people, mainly Muslims, were killed, took place as a reaction to an incident where a train carrying Hindu activists was allegedly torched, killing 59 people in Gujarat's Godhra town on February 27, 2002. Hindu groups blamed a Muslim mob for the fire.

Recently, the RSS organized a massive anti-Christian rally in Dangs from February 11 to 13, 2006.

The U.S. in March 2005 had denied Modi a diplomatic visa and also revoked his tourist/business visa as per a section of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act that prohibits anybody who was "responsible for, or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom" from entering that country. Modi wanted to visit the U.S. for a meeting organised by the Association of Indian-Americans of North America.

The city police will construct a boundary wall and watchtowers to bolster the security of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in the Mahal area. Terrorists had unsuccessfully tried to storm the building on June 1, 2006.

Commissioner of Police Satyapal Singh said the wall would be 12-ft high and will have two watch towers and utilities for the deployed security personnel. "The policemen posted in the watch towers would not be visible from outside and only the police control room will know about their presence," Singh said. The watch towers will reduce the number of police personnel to be deployed for security at the RSS headquarters, he added.

The wall will replace the metal barricades presently placed to guard the building perceived as one of the most vulnerable places in the city and hence the fortification plan. The wall has been named Suraksha Kavach.

Sources said that a special team from Mumbai had visited Nagpur some months ago. After reviewing the security arrangements at RSS headquarters recommended the security wall. The city police then sent a communication to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) seeking permission for the construction, which was promptly granted.

As NMC did not have adequate funds at disposal, state BJP president Nitin Gadkari sanctioned Rs 10 lakh from his MLC funds for the wall. However, mayor Maya Iwnate has promised all possible help in construction of the wall.

Sources further said that top RSS functionaries were not very keen on the security wall. They did not offer much cooperation to the police and the NMC. The bhoomipujan for the wall was performed on Saturday morning near the RSS building. It is expected to be complete in three months.

Mr. Modi’s image makers have advised him to concentrate on the economy in an effort to recast himself. KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has reportedly warned that ethnic Indian activists accused of having links with Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers could be held under internal security laws.

Ethnic rights group Hindraf, which organised mass anti-discrimination protests in November that were broken up with tear gas and water cannon, has been accused of seeking support from the Tigers.

Abdullah said he had ordered police to monitor Hindraf leaders and followers on suspicion of association with terrorists, and that they could be dealt with under the Internal Security Act (ISA) which allows detention without trial.

"ISA is an option," the premier said according to the New Straits Times. "I will decide when the time is right."

"If they are deemed (as a threat to national security) we will know what to do."

Cabinet minister Nazri Abdul Aziz reportedly said Hindraf would be banned if it was found to be supported by groups like the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Hindu paramilitary group Rashtriya Swayamesevak Sangh (RSS).

"If it is true that Hindraf leaders have links with them, Hindraf is also a terrorist group," the de facto law minister said according to the Star daily.

Local Christians say Hindu terrorists are responsible, but police deny claim.

NEW DELHI, November 27 (Compass Direct News) – A mob allegedly led by a Hindu extremist group demolished a house church and beat the pastor and believers on November 19 in Chhattisgarh state’s Bastar district. The following day, a young relative of the pastor allegedly kidnapped by the extremists was found dead in a nearby jungle.

The attack on a house church belonging to the Christ Missionary Movement took place at about 5 p.m. in Mandwa village near Jadgalpur area of Bastar. The body of 21-year-old Aayatu Kashyap, a Christian and distant relative of the church’s pastor, Suduru Kashyap, was found about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the village.

The superintendent of police of Bastar district, G.P. Singh, confirmed the incidents but denied the claim of local Christians that Hindu extremists were behind the attack and killing.

According to the All India Christian Council (AICC), the attack was led by the Bajrang Dal, youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or World Hindu Council, whose members came in a jeep to attack the church and Pastor Kashyap, warning him not to conduct worship services again.

The extremists vandalized the church till it came to rubble, said an AICC statement, adding that they tied up Pastor Kashyap and his associates and severely beat them. Area Christians reportedly said the extremists tried to kill the pastor by throwing a heavy stone on his head.

A local Christian, on condition of anonymity, said the mob identified 21-year-old Aayatu Kashyap as Pastor Kashyap’s relative, and therefore they killed him.

Area Christians said the extremists abducted the young man the day of the attack, murdered him, and left his body in the jungle on the outskirts of the village. They said a police report showed the death occurred that night, November 19, between 7 and 8 o’clock, and that knife wounds were evident on the body.

The AICC quoted Arun Pannalal, general secretary of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum, as saying that when Pastor Kashyap and his associates went to the Kodenar police station to lodge a complaint, they were detained for 24 hours without food and water and later released without their complaint being registered.

The police reportedly registered the complaint after the AICC issued the statement on November 22.

Police Version

Superintendent Singh said the killing of Pastor Kashyap’s relative was a “separate incident.”

“The body was found around 15 kilometers from Mandwa village, and the deceased was drunk,” he said.

Asked about the injuries found on his body, Singh said the young man was apparently killed from a heavy stone crushing his head.

He said police had registered a separate complaint against unidentified persons for the killing under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, which concerns murder.

The police superintendent also told Compass that those who attacked Pastor Kashyap and members of his church were local villagers who had been objecting to the pastor constructing a church hall inside his house.

Police said the 21 people arrested were local residents who did not belong to any Hindu extremist groups.

“The villagers were also angry with the pastor because he used to criticize other gods,” Singh said. The superintendent claimed the pastor received only “minor” injuries.

“There is another pastor in the area, but he was not attacked,” Singh said. “Why was only Kashyap’s church targeted?”

There are around 40 converted families in Mandwa village, he said, adding that some of them attend Pastor Kashyap’s church while others go to the church of the other pastor.

Chhattisgarh is ruled by Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the most influential Hindu extremist group and parent organization of a plethora of militant organizations in India.

The north-central state is one of the most insecure states for the Christian minority community. Chhattisgarh has a population of more than 20.8 million, out of which only 401,035 are Christian.

According to Dayal, it is an out and out campaign of violence which the fundamentalists with the support of their political leaders have orchestrated with precise intent: firstly to pressurise and coerce the minorities, specially the Christians, at a time when they are seeking redress in the supreme court of India for human rights; the second has to be seen in the context of the announcements by various governments that they want to bring forward laws to prevent conversions, obviously to Christianity. The skirmishes and violence will help them prove that Christian activity leads to social tensions. And finally to politically consolidate the xenophobic amongst the population on a Hindutva platform.

Mission & Vision RSS & Minorities

R.S.S. believes in the plural structure of society. Therefore, it recognizes that there is bound to be a majority-minority syndrome, and hence each group, whether in the majority or minority, will have a distinct identity and distinct character. Hindu philosophy, to which R.S.S. is committed, accepts and appreciates diversities. Even nature abhors uniformity. Basis of Minority Character
But the majority-minority distinctions must be restricted to the bases on which the minority character is sought to be claimed. For example, we can have religion as a basis for being a minority; so also we can have language as another basis for being a minority. Our constitution recognizes both these types of minorities. (see Article 30.) Every minority, whether based on religion or language, will have a distinct identity, special problems and special aspirations. These specialities must be recognized and, subject to moral order and general law, must be protected.
The problem arises when a particular minority transgresses the basis of its minority character and assumes a political one. What is true of a linguist minority is equally true of a religious minority. According to our thinking there is no political minority, because every individual has a vote of equal value. No minority-member's vote has less value than that of a majority - member. So all laws that govern the behaviour of citizens must be the same for all.
RSS Stand on Sikhs
We regard the Sikh religion as a separate religion, but we regard the Sikh people as belonging to our Samaj. When we say that they are a part of the one great Hindu Samaj, we do not deny the existence of their separate religion and separate beliefs. Hindu Samaj is a commonwealth of many religions. It includes idol worshippers as well as those that are against idol worship. It includes those who accept the authority of the Vedas as well as those who do not. They are all included in the wider Hindu conceptualization.

No RSS Invention
This is not an R.S.S. invention. It has been there for centuries. This is recognized also by our constitution. Explanation II given under Article 25 says, "In sub-clause (b) of clause (2) the reference to Hindus shall be construed as including a reference to persons professing the Sikh, Jain or Buddhist religion, and the reference to Hindu religious institutions shall be construed accordingly." It should be noted that the Hindu Code Bill, though it contains the word 'Hindu', is applicable to Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. We desire that it should be applicable to all, including the Christians and the Muslims, as is envisaged in Article 44 of our constitution.
The basic postulate is that 'Hindu' is not a religion but a way of life, or more precisely a certain value-system or culture. One of the basic tenets of this value system is to accept the validity of all faiths and religions. If we deny this plurality, we will cease to be Hindus. Many Sikhs attend the R.S.S. Shakhas, but nobody is asked to remove his beard or his pugree. R.S.S. will never try to obliterate the identity of the Sikhs. That will be against the very grain of the R.S.S.
Pope's Discordant Note
As for Christianity or Islam, we desire that they too should fall in line of accepting the validity of other religions. The Millennium Peace Summit, which was held in New York in August 1999, adopted a declaration that they consider all religions equal. We want that the Christian and Islam religions give their approval to this declaration, which is signed by about one thousand religious leaders of various denominations. Surprisingly His Holiness the Pope struck a discordant note and declared that the Roman Catholic Church cannot accept other religions as equal. We wonder whether this is in consonance with the fundamentals of our constitution.
RSS against Mass Conversions
R.S.S. is against mass conversion, which is carried on by various churches by means both fair and foul. To allow a tolerant person to embrace an exclusionist belief is to turn him into an intolerant person. For this reason R.S.S. is against the proselytizing activities of Christians churches.
RSS not against any religion, but some religions are extremely intolerant of other religions. Why could 5% Hindus not live with dignity and honour in the Kashmir valley? Why do Riangs have to flee from their homes in Mizoram? We wonder whether there is any commission to look into their grievances.

National Conference On Banning The RSS Hindu Terorist Group

The main aim of the conference was to put a united front of communities against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) the Hindu terrorist group. Leaders from all communities belonging to Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Janis and Sikhs participated in the event that include:

All the community leaders supported the ban on the RSS and there was consensus on the issue to impose ban on such type of organisations in U.K.

The leaders unanimously adopted a resolution urging the UK government to declare RSS as the terrorist organisation.

A paper was also distributed in the conference in which the community leaders gave the reasons for banning the RSS in the UK.

The RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr.K.B. Hedgewar. The RSS is active throughout India and as well as abroad. It became a mass organisation under the leadership of M.S Golwalker. M.S Golwalker is seen as the spiritual master of this organisation and is referred to as Guru, he is worshipped and presumed as a god. Golwalker was a sympathiser of Hitler and said that

Hindus can learn a lesson from Hitller and his pure race ideology. In support of this Golwalker said violence should be used a surgeon’s knife to

kill society. Even he goes on to say that the one who do not accept Hindutva as the main religion and culture of India is merely a disease which need treatment. To kill them is merely like using medicine to cure a disease.Now we are talking about a person who thinks that humans with different beliefs should be wiped out, he takes this logic directly from Hitler. He goes on to state

the main idea of the RSS that only Hindus should reside within India.When scholars have gone on to research Golwalker’s work it is easily understood that he is not preaching Hinduism, but it is a different religion named as Hindutva. The RSS has many wings such as Vidya Bharti, Shiv sena, Bajrang Dal and other splinter groups. They also have links within the political parties of India of all sorts, the main being the BJP. The BJP is so heavily influenced by the RSS that it is

referred to as the political wing of the RSS.

The RSS also influences policies of every single political party in India, may it be Congress BJP and so on. The main preaching point which the RSS propagates is that there is only one true ideology in this world, and that is Hindutva and that humanity only has one religion and one culture i.e., Hinduism.

It sees Christianity as merely a branch of Hinduism, it refers to Christians as a part of the Hindu faith, through the alteration of historical books, which are taught in schools across India as a compulsory curriculum in which it is taught that Jesus was an incarnation of Hindu gods. He was merely there to give direction to society and the west.

They further go on to say similar things about Islam that all Muslims are Hindus which believe in Prophet Mohammed. It describes Muslims as

Mohammediya Hindus. It is preached in the state schools of India, through the Divya Bharti on a compulsive basis.

Buddhism is also opposed in a similar manner, as Buddhists see themselves as a separate religion, the RSS and its sister groups claim that real Buddhism is Hinduism.

The RSS sees Sikhism as the biggest threat to its ideology and Hindutva. Guru Nanak condemned the caste system and the unfair treatment of lower castes, and discrimination to women, he was born into a family which is regarded as a slave caste, within the RSS ideology. It is like a revolution from within to them and they have tried their utmost to destroy and to finish Sikhism off by all means necessary socially, politically and

Economically. They claim all Sikh Gurus were Hindus; they have tried to alter all Sikh scriptures to match their views of Hindutva.The British Govt

Recognises the Sikh faith as a distinct religion ad a separate race, in opposition to this the RSS continue to maintain Sikhs are Hindus. The human

Rights abuses committed by RSS are nothing short of a holocaust within India, and the world has just overlooked it. The main reason for this is because of the sheer amount of propaganda the RSS is propagating RSS has carried out riots in the last 60 years in so called Independent India. The events of every single massacre have formed a very similar pattern. From Sikhs in Delhi 1984 to Muslims in Gujarat 2002 massacre. This is how it takes place.

• Events are created or used to carry out the ethnic cleaning of minorities.

• Media black-out was setup all around India

• Mobs was organised and arms and weapons were issue to them. Including small fire arms, hang guns and small machine guns, swords, metal rods, petrol etc.

• Transport was arranged for the mobs and they were driven to their destinations.

• Sikh Shops were attacked, looted and burnt.

• Men were killed

• Women were gang raped and some died as result of the shock.

• Some were shot dead

• Others were stabbed with knife and swords to death

• Others were beaten to death

• As the mobs found Sikhs they beat them into submission, tyre was put

around their neck and then they were set alight.

• Attack were also organised at hospitals to kill all the new born Sikh

infants. They hacked into peaces or drown to death.

• Others were hacked to death

All this is overlooked by politicians which have been bought by the RSS as well as local law enforcement agencies. The RSS through propaganda and spreading of rumours likes to create communal tensions between different

communities. Once the tensions rise they use this to forward their own agenda. The RSS should not be funded from the UK, it is gathering funds from

all areas of the UK through its sister groups.

The RSS has recently increased its activities within the UK against Sikhs and Muslims. By creating tension between Sikhs and Muslims for no apparent reason. They have also tried to divide these two communities from within by causing internal conflict within theses two communities. As citizens of the UK we all have the right to live peacefully and worship in whatever way we choose fit. We cannot have a group like the

RSS which takes its direct inspiration .The UK prides itself on Human rights and equality. The responsibility to all of us here to get this group banned under the Home office auspices and to get its funding stopped.
